Cold Rain
I posted this in the other thread, but it's kind of an ob, so I'll put it here too. If any of you get a chance and you have snow on the ground, go outside and get away from street lights and house lights, if you can, and just take in one of nature's rare and most beautiful moments in this part of the world. It's such an awesome experience to be able to stand outside on a cold winter's night and watch the snow sparkle under the light of the nearly full moon. The night is unusually bright as the snow reflects the fullness of the moon's light. And the only sound you hear is the distinctive crunch as you step quietly through the snow. It's a unique and unforgettable beauty that is rarely afforded in our part of the world and one to be treasured for sure. Enjoy it before it's gone. Jalba
Amazing storm, definitely one of the higher totals across the area. The entire county was covered in at least 8-9" in some places reporting 10" I myself saw about 7" at around 6:30am when I had to go in to work, didnt get a chance to venture out until 5 this evening.. so I didn't officially measure that much but definitely believe it. Best storm accumulation we've had in years here easily.

Up where you guys are, you can easily get away from manmade lights. I used to go to my grandparents house in the country when I was a kid, and we'd go for a walk in the woods, and you would never need a light. So amazing. sarcean
Was a really solid storm in the Greensboro area. Went to High Point, Jamestown, and NW Greensboro today along the Green Way and found plenty of pockets of easily 10"+. I think the best storm ive seen since moving here in 2005 or at the least biggest snow since 2009.

Solak
US National Weather Service Raleigh NC added 2 new photos. 37 mins · Well, the forecast didn't pan out across some portions of our area over the past 24 hours. Winter weather forecasting is extremely complex, as we--and some of you--certainly know. We wanted to take some time tonight to explain why that is the case and why we sometimes struggle with precipitation type forecasts. Please see the attached graphic for more information. The second graphic shows that the general snowfall amounts were captured in our forecast, but the "warm nose" explained in the first graphic limited snowfall production and led to more sleet and freezing rain along the southern periphery of the heaviest snow. Note that this is not meant to be an excuse. Trust us when we say that we are just as frustrated as some of you that our forecast snowfall amounts and precipitation types didn't come to fruition across the entire area. However, despite us missing some aspects of the forecast, our entire area has experienced hazardous winter storm conditions over the past 12 to 24 hours. We appreciate all of your reports and pictures that helped us map out the storm as, and after, it affected our area. We now move forward to the near-record cold that this storm left in its wake, which has its own realm of hazards. We will continue to strive to provide you with the best forecast possible. 7 Comments 27 Shares

So you are saying the moon on the breast of a new fallen snow, gives a luster of midday to objects below?

Went to High Point, Jamestown, and NW Greensboro today along the Green Way and found plenty of pockets of easily 10"+. I think the best storm ive seen since moving here in 2005 or at the least biggest snow since 2009. Were you around for this one?

That was an awesome storm in the Triad, but we tainted a ton in that one, and the changeover to sleet occurred a little earlier than expected (we had 20" snow Euro runs the night before that one, LOL). Then the ULL destroyed the foothills on the following day, but it never really did much in the Triad aside from dropping maybe an additional inch. This storm was nice (I presume) because it was all-snow. I loved February 25-26, 2015 because of that, as well.
Dunkman
That storm had a freaking ice storm in the middle of it. At least at my house I did (at the base of the 9 in Guilford County). That band that rolled through at the end after all the ice was just about as hard as I've seen it snow here though (too bad it lasted for about 15 minutes). Yeah, I am sure it was more impactful and it shut things down for awhile, but taint always sours things for me a little personally. The start of that storm was freaking awesome, though. It snowed so heavily that afternoon with temperatures near 20, but we sleeted much of the night, unfortunately, before going back over to snow with the ULL the next day. It's still probably my favorite storm during the 2007-2016 period, though. January 2010 was good, too. I lived right by the 9, as well. I liked February 2015 a lot, though. That snow was so beautiful, even if it was a warm, above-freezing snow (really heavy snow, too, just a quick-hitter). 6.5" of cake which stuck to all surfaces.
