I would certainly not want to hinge hopes of a "winter comeback" on the month of March Last few years have been great for snow in March and early April. Have had a few nice events, so I dont believe that March 1 is the end. I think after March 20 or so it becomes more difficult, but we have had plenty of good storms in early March. The only other instance I know of where Europe had a cold winter in the absence of a -NAO and the US was mild is 1990-91. The two similarities to that winter so far in the US are the cold west and this region being relatively snowy given how bad the pattern has been

That pseudoblock or east-based NAO/NATL ridge tends to be better for Europe than for the Northeast US.

It's a great example of how blocking near teleconnection regions can mimic them even when it falls outside the region.
nzucker
NYC has had only 10 minima of 32F or less this January and only 2 maxima of 32F or less. That's got to be up there with Jan 2012, 2006, and 2002.

Yes, ridiculously long stretch of no cold air in what is traditionally the coldest part of winter. I think we've had 13 straight days with 40+ highs at KNYC. It will be hard to get a Top Ten warmest winter given the +2 to +3 departure in December. We'd need the Feb 10-28 period to REALLY torch. Last year we put up a +13 in December which made it easy despite January finishing only +2.8 and Feb a degree milder.
