Snow squalls last night dropped 1.1" imby & at DTW. I was in downtown Detroit at a charity event. While snow fell off and on much of the evening, when a whiteout descended on downtown around midnight it was quite a sight. View from the 16th floor of Motor City Casino Hotel. Below are shots of heavy snow shrouding the city, then when i was a near whiteout, then after the squall tapered to flurries. I would guess around an inch fell downtown as well, maybe slightly less.

You're scoring a lot of squalls over there in  Motown! Makes me think GEOS left you his magnet

Just double checking on this, I think you were looking at the average daily max, the average Jan 2017 temp today is 29.5F. Is that even a top 20?

You are right. I seen that mistake after I made the post. That is what happens when one is tired and can not see with one eye and is blind in the other. It has been a warm January just not as warm as I had posted. So with my foot in my mouth I will offer an apology that along with some money will buy everyone a drink of their choice.

Yeah I was quite surprised how much snow we got over on my side of town, it was definitely over an inch last night.

A few days ago it was river effect snow off the Mississippi, and now its factory effect snow in NW. Indiana.

LSR of 1.1" of snow in Portage, coming off the factories in Gary.

Actually, there's river/bluff effect snow coming off the Mississippi in the DVN CWA once agin too.

I remember seeing the factory thing before, but can't recall specific dates.

you can see the radar echoes blossom right over Gary then move downwind.....

I think the band is also moving over the very small part of the lake before Gary..but the factories seem to give it an extra boost

LES yesterday helped YYZ move from being the 2nd least snowiest January on record to 3rd now, lol.

3.18" now for the month as of yesterday. 2nd place is 3.07" in Jan 2006, so its a very small margin, but still better than being 2nd, lol.

4th position is Jan 1947 at 3.82". Could be beat depending how much we snow we get Jan 31st from the clipper, if at all.

LOT

ALSO OF NOTE, LOCALIZED AND PERSISTENT SNOWFALL HAS BEEN
IN PLACE ACROSS FAR NORTHERN LAKE AND PORTER COUNTIES IN NORTHWEST
INDIANA SINCE YESTERDAY. THIS PLUME OF SNOW APPEARS TO BE
ORIGINATING (PER TMDW IMAGERY) IN THE WHITING/EAST CHICAGO TO GARY
AREA SO SUSPECT THE SMOKE STACKS IN THAT AREA ARE HELPING TO
ENHANCE THE SNOWFALL.

Hard to get snow showers here west of the lakes.  They stayed about a county or two off to the east today.  Did see a few flurries earlier this afternoon.  Had to look hard for them though, as it was nothing more than a flake or two now and again in the breeze.  Top 3 event for this January though.

/\ Had that here too... for about 30 minutes lol.  Actually almost got an inch!  Woke my grandson up and took a walk with him and the dog in it.  Told him to enjoy it, may not see it like this again until next winter.

Those walks are fun. Plenty of winter to go.

Got a total snow from Sat night thru early this morning of 2.5" imby & 2.7" at DTW. Season to date now 27.2" imby and 24.4" at DTW. Looks like winter again! Expecting a fresh 3" or so with the clipper tonight.

Why no thread for the clipper?   I mean here in central OH we're getting screwed once again in a whole new way, (being missed to the north east),  but for you folks in Michigan it should be a fairly nice event.

Don't tell me you've become snow snobs :P

i think you are right - i will try my hand at starting a thread.

Pretty impressive temp gradient in eastern Iowa.  29 at Dubuque, and a balmy 54 at Ottumwa.  Up to 33 here, but just to the west it's approaching 40 at MLI.  The pesky layer of dense overcast at around 2000ft is starting to break up as the warmer air aloft is moving in from the west.  Should be cleared off nicely in the next hour, with some scattered high clouds.  Scenic sunset watch is in full effect.
