Previous paper shows effects similar to this on land areas in northern Scandinavia. Not hard to imagine that this rate of warming along the rim of the Kara Sea would be of similar magnitude. At the very least, it shows that we are approaching (in 15-20 years) the point where upper layer widespread permafrost melt will begin. Loss of Arctic sea ice for large stretches of the year and increased instances of rainfall will no doubt continue to hasten warming.

Hard to understate how hard this train will be to stop once it starts. It will almost undoubtedly eat into the net land sink and could get bad enough to turn it into a net source. If that happens, you're literally down to relying on the oceans as your only remaining natural sink.

Edit: Thanks to Zach Labe's Twitter stream for bringing this graph to my attention.

The Role of Downward Infrared Radiation in the Recent Arctic Winter Warming Trend

During the past three decades, the most rapid warming at the surface has occurred during the Arctic winter. By analyzing daily ERA-Interim data, we found that the majority of the winter warming trend north of 70°N can be explained by the trend in the downward infrared radiation (IR). This downward IR trend can be attributed to an enhanced poleward flux of moisture and sensible heat into the Arctic by poleward propagating Rossby waves, which increases the total column water and temperature within this region. This enhanced moisture flux is mostly due to changes in the planetary-scale atmospheric circulation rather than an increase in moisture in lower latitudes. The results of this study lead to the question of whether Arctic amplification has mostly arisen through changes in the Rossby wave response to greenhouse gas forcing and its impact on moisture transport into the Arctic.

CO2 definitely has a large role in climate....doubling CO2 produces a 3.7 watts per meter squared energy increase, which when converted to temperature, is about 1.1-1.2 degrees C. This is a mathematical certainty...physics. It's not arguable. In order to claim that doubling CO2 has either a lower or higher effect on temperature than this, you have to prove that the feedbacks are either negative or positive.

Good luck with that!  ..That'll just incense them further...

We live in delusional era where "alternative facts" now dictate the process of reasoning .. If you attempt to correct any faux realism with actual facts ..the dissenters come back angry first. That pretty much stops any further affecting communication on any the subject, for that matter, not just the climate ( the conundrum of failure to reach into the hearts and minds of the "idiocracy" is really almost more about an ilk of person/being/mental make-up).

Not to digress, but indulge for a moment: "Alternative Facts" came about because of being bludgeoned by sentiments like, 'can't you see fact?!' for the last 20 years of this stuff; and by 'stuff, usually it pertains to the climate holocaust and ecological disaster that is directly tied into it.

So, what does the opposition do?  Come up with their own facts!  Yippeeeeee.

Usually the a-facts are dubious data and or reasoning creases that were either cherry picked/taken out of context from other sources/uses, and/or simply cobbled together - yes, fabricated on the spot.  Who do we know in high office that does that?   (Hint: recently elected).

Ultimately, immoral. All it is is an attempt to draw up an argument that supports what they WANT to hear and see about the world around them, not what they actually see and hear about the world around them. It's really a fantastic example of how self-centered individualism and solipsism can (ironically) work together toward the same goal: 'me gets to gets what i want without having anything stand in my way'

Point is, you can't penetrate their minds with math and logical reasoning. You could poke their toes with needles and they would argue it doesn't hurt.

The Barnes Ice cap on Baffin Island started to retreat in the 1800s after a 2000 year period of stability. Rocks recently exposed along the edge of the ice cap haven't been exposed since the last interglacial 125k years ago.
