Do we know what the official total is for BTV at the moment?  Did they move up to their # 2 storm?

Apparently as of 306 PM was still just #3.

FYI - currently a storm
total of 29.7" at BTV...making it #1 on the list of March
storms and #3 overall. Please see climate section below for more
record information.

I know everyone jokes about how well the coastal plain has done recently at the expense of inland areas, but BTV has 4 of their top 5 events in the last 10 years.  Their records go back to the late 1800s don't they? Interesting.

Well I must admit that I don't remember the 2011 storm.  Was that during Eyewall's visit that convinced him that it always snows big in the CPV?   The top storm in 2010 was bizarre.  It was a local upslope as part of that retrograde storm that ruined winter for Maine.  The forecast was for widespread big snows but I got 3 in Peacham while the Burlington area got crushed with pure fluff.  My memory could be wrong on all of this however.

You guys couldn't convince him to live on the west slopes of the greens or East of the spine??:)

Yea, 2010 was the fluff bomb upslope that actually crushed down here as well.  Not sure about 2011, im sure someone will come along to reminisce.

Just got reconnected to the world.  What an epic storm.  The NWS observer one town south of me reported 16.6" but I think I got closer to 10-12".   So much blowing and drifting that everything just kept blowing in the woods.  I really couldn't get a good measurement and didn't have a snow board.   Relentless strong winds.  Davis recorded many gusts in the 30's but its old and measures low.  High gust was  38mph but seemed like winds were gusting in the 50's up here at 1100 feet.   Roar in the trees was incredible.   Visibility was down to 500 feet at times.  Here is a quick video during the storm.

not sure if best storm ever

or worst storm ever

Thought I was going to have to start burning furniture last night.  Got down to 55 in here and I was afraid my crotons would start dropping leaves.

That series of gusts that hit a few minutes after the power went out were perhaps second only to the 7/6/99 deathbow.

At 3:50pm they came in with 29.9 inches making it to #2. Either way I think the most impressive thing about this one is how widespread big totals are.

Event totals: 32.8” Snow/1.82” L.E.

The snowfall rates slowed down during this most recent 6-hour block, so settling is making its presence known a bit more and the snow to liquid ratio isn’t quite at the level it was during the morning.  The snowfall rate has recently picked up though, so there will be some additional accumulation to report.

Details from the 7:00 P.M. Waterbury observations:

New Snow: 2.4 inches

New Liquid: 0.10 inches

Snow/Water Ratio: 24.0

Snow Density: 4.2% H2O

Temperature: 20.3 F

Sky: Snow (2-15 mm flakes)

Snow at the stake: 25.0 inches

Nope.  I live on a main road so we generally get power back within 2 hours.  There have been four big exceptions over the last few years that have me reconsidering, though.

Ventless propane heaters are awesome, cheap and efficient and run without electricity

Well, adk wasn’t kidding when he talked about the potential for additional upslope tonight – the snowfall has really ramped up over the past hour or so and it’s coming down in the 1-2”/hr. range out there.  You can see the moisture still smashing into the spine:

15MAR17A.gif

I did an intermediate check on the board at 10:00 P.M. and there was 4.5” new on it.  That puts this storm past the three foot mark here.

I just did the 3rd run with the snow thrower to clear the driveway, and I’ve never done that for a single storm before (I didn’t have a snow thrower back during the 2007 Valentine’s Day Storm but that one probably would have needed it).

Wow dude, that's pretty amazing. Looking at the radar 40+ seems within reason.

Yeah, 1.5” new in the past hour, so the potential certainly seems to be there if this keeps up.  The next clearing and analysis can’t be until 1:00 A.M. because of today’s measurement schedule, but I’m up working anyway so it’s probably worth catching that interval with respect to documenting this event. Combining a big upslope event with a synoptic storm the size of this one doesn’t happen every day, so it’s definitely worth the effort.

Well, I grabbed the latest storm totals I could find for the Vermont ski areas, using the 48-hour totals or storm totals if noted.  The north to south listing is below.  Totals are nice all around, although there are some very impressive totals coming out of the north.  The text portion of the Jay Peak snow report is from this morning, but unless it’s a typo, the 48-hour total is showing an impressive 72” of snow from this event so far.  I grabbed a screen shot of that page because that’s certainly not something we see every day.

Jay Peak: 72”

Burke: 18”

Smuggler’s Notch: 40”

Stowe: 36”

Bolton Valley: 45”

Mad River Glen: 30”

Sugarbush: 27”

Middlebury: 28”

Suicide Six: 20”

Pico: 26”

Killington: 26”

Okemo: 18”

Bromley: 20”

Magic Mountain: 20”

Stratton: 20”

Mount Snow: 22”

If you read the text, they tell you the 72" is not accurate. Their totals are in the 36" to 40" range.

Sugarbush reporting another foot overnight to bring the total to 33" for Stella.

Yeah I had a foot at the base area but its real windy.

Wanted to play it conservatively with 10-14"... Grooming thinks it snowed harder last night than it did the night before.

50" storm total and that might be conservative at this point.  The long time groomers are comparing this to March 5-6, 2001 and Valentines Day 2007 now.  I can't remember this much fresh snow in the base area in a long time.  It was a real struggle getting to the snow stake...up to my chest at times.
