That s/w does not have the look of an explosive deepening, but we are also talking more than 6 days out. That potential doesn't excite me too much at the moment, but could bring some -SN to the area. Maybe tail end gets a boost or something...but that's far out there relatively speaking.

If the pattern is right you clean up quick but if you are on the wrong end of it, it's sultan time. Same as here really.
USCAPEWEATHERAF
I would love to forecast for Nova Scotia and New Foundland, Canada, those lows are extremely explosive, like they get down to 940mb.
USCAPEWEATHERAF
Nick, why do lows near New Foundland, Canada get so low in pressure? Is it due to the 498dm polar vortex lows up there and closer to the low itself?

USCAPEWEATHERAF
Wow so why does the Ocean influence the weather more in New Foundland then it does in SNE? We have an explosive ocean setup to our south and southeast.

I'm just saying the ocean-atmospheric coupling doesn't get going until your longitude. Here shortwaves are interacting with ocean 1000 miles west of us, before they get here. New England lows can be just as explosive as here, but they are just not as frequent.

USCAPEWEATHERAF
But you could see an explosive scenario in the future that brings a surface low say sub-950mb at the benchmark for New England?

I'm pretty sure there's a low in the kocin book near the benchmark that was around 952 mb. NL's record is 940.
USCAPEWEATHERAF
I can't find my Kocin book, I wish I had it. I mean in order for the sub-950mb low to occur and all snow on Cape Cod it would have to be nearly 100 miles south of Nantucket so no taint or rain occurs too. I think Christmas week or weekend will have a storm. Just unsure on the details as usual lol.

ORH_wxman
Both gfs and GGEM are still trying for Dec 14th as well. Both give accumulating snowfall...GGEM looks a bit nicer...gfs is kind of awkward with the development to where it almost looks like a fropa. USCAPEWEATHERAF
Yeah unfortunately all the cold disappears as the storm comes through the region, the would be cold gets scoured out of the region and snow chances turn to rain. I hope those highs, arctic highs were over the Quebec region of Canada rather than to our southeast.
