bluewave
12 out of those 14 years all had a NYC December average temperature below 40 degrees. The only 2 exceptions were 1957 and 1990. It would be interesting to see how far back in time you would have to go to repeat the consecutive 6"or more events during the first week of December 2002 and 2003. I believe all the known first week 6" or more events were in 2003, 2002, 1957, 1911, and 1886. Pretty rare overall for a 6" or more event in before mid to late month. The 2003 over 12" for the first week of December was the earliest on record since the 1870's. I wonder how many 12" or more events there were in NYC that early during the Little Ice Age? bluewave
In addition to favorable 500 mb patterns for NYC December snowfall, temperature is very important in determining an above or below normal month. NYC has needed to stay below an average December temperature of 40 degrees in order to be eligible for above the 4.8" average December snowfall going back to 2000.
