The problem is there is no catch all.  The QBO is one price of the puzzle but its only one piece.   The enso state is another piece and yes a combo of cold or neutral enso and west qbo is bad but there are exceptions even to that.  Just looking at those two the closest match to this year in terms of pure enso and qbo values is 2013/14.  But that year had an anomalous warm pool in the north pacific that equated to a -epo that took over the pattern most of the winter and offset a pretty positive AO, which is usually a very bad thing for our snowfall prospects.  There are lots of variables.  However, having those two variables skews the odds greatly in favor of warm.  But even enso isnt static.  The location of the enso anomalies is just as important as the standard deviation of them.  We generally want the warmer waters to be centered in the central pacific and that is regardless of enso signal.  In other words we want a modoki nino and an east based nina.  This was a west based cold/neutral winter, and even as it became totally neutral it did so by the eastern tropical pacific warming which is NOT the way we wanted it to happen if we wanted cold.  We would have been better off with a nina across the basin then a neutral with cold in the central and warm in the eastern pacific.  Seems the regardless of enso state warmer wated west places the tropical forcing in a better location to allow troughing into the eastern US.  So all of these moving parts come together and factor into the overall pattern.  And on top of that sometimes we simply get some of the factors wrong.  Patters change unexpectedly.  The QBO failed to flip phases last year...things like that.   JB tends to ignore the unfavorable factors and highlight the favorable ones.  But he has gone so far with that to the point I no longer think its honest bias and feel he is simply doing it on purpose. 

What I was thinking was the fact that it was so close to neutral actually made it worse than if it had been a stronger la nina.  As you said, the location of the warm pool and the degree of anomaly needed to be factored in also.  It's interesting you mentioned the 2013-14 winter, as a lot of long range forecasters were actually comparing this winter to that one in terms of preseason analogs!  We finished with a AO+ that winter, but the EPO was so - it didn't matter?

Me?  I enjoy reading him, but you have to take the above into account.  I also like Joe D's blog over there as well as the models.  Maue has done a great job on that front.

I think his best forecast was in 2002-03 which makes sense because that was one of our best winters for snow.

Unc what was the lowest temp we had in the following winters :2011-12, 2001-02, 1997-98.  So far this season it's been 14.  We might tie that or beat that this morning.  Also, when was the last time our coldest weather of the season was in March?  Was that the latest it's ever been?

Last year was even more extreme with the record snowfall and the -1 in mid February!

It was three storms, and I got 27" just a bit to the east of him.  I generally agree that warm patterns don't produce snowstorms, but all you need is 1 or 2 cold days.  I think we're moving towards (or are already in) that kind of climate, as we've seen the last few years, one or two cold days is all you need for a snowstorm.

It looks like we're developing some kind of pattern that unless you're near the coast or in lake effect country snowfall totals will be below normal.  Allentown had one of its worst winters also.  So it's not even a long/lat thing, it's more of a being near the storm track plus or being downwind of the lakes.

You have a local snowhole effect pattern over interior areas to our west that are too far east to get into the best of the lake effect snows. But too far west to take advantage of the record coastal storms like our area has.

the 14 degrees this morning ties the lowest temp of the winter...there are not many years with the lowest winter temperature coming on March 5th...only 1890, 1891 and 1980 had its lowest temperature in March...2002 like this year tied its lowest temp in March...

Thanks Chris, I wonder if warmer SSTs are enhancing the effects as storms are bombing out more rapidly and interior areas are getting robbed of moisture as the coastal storm consolidates and intensifies more quickly.

It just seemed that in the 80s we had secondaries developing much later or not at all.

I thought maybe March 1993 was in there because of the cold air in the wake of the Superstorm.  Wasn't it in the teens then also?

I think it's a combination of the record SST warmth off the East Coast combined with the more intense blocking patterns producing the heavier snows near the coast. But the flip side of this pattern is record warmth when there is inadequate blocking to overpower the warm signal.

Yes, that explains the warm/snowy pattern, as any other outcome is becoming far less likely.  It's why we've been having so many +5 to +10 months in the cold season as well as so many 10"+ snowstorms.

14 degrees was the low for March 1960...1990 hit 13 degrees the first week in March and a week later it was 85 degrees...I missed 1932...it had its coldest temp of the winter in March also...
