I don't care about the qpf but when areas 10-20 miles to your sw are seeing amounts slashed it gets dicey. I still have nightmare flashbacks to Jan 2015

Would have been quite nervous if I were still in Union County, to be honest with ya. One more shift and totals get cut even more.

What's the highest total anywhere from this storm? The highest I found was 18"

Relative to what...? It's infinitely more accurate than measuring in the grass, on pavement, or atop an elevated surface. Beyond that, I can't think of anything better.

Relative to a forecast calling for 6" of snow 99.999% of people think snow on the ground. Not the snow board nonsense.

It also skews totals. Most on here don't use snowboards so from a comparative standpoint they are problematic.

Well snow measuring is inherently an inexact science, and more than a little subjective. Anything that attempts to standardize the methodology is a good idea. I'd rather be confident in the strict accuracy of my total than feel obliged to corroborate a report from Joe the Plumber who woke up four hours after the storm ended and stuck a ruler in the top of his truck that was parked in the shade of a building.

13.5 today brings me to 32.8" for the season. Nw Suffolk.

I always measure snow depth which gives a lower number than snow boards. Some members always use snow boards (and too often) creating a different metric.

Measuring with a snow board inflates totals. I said it.

You should contact NWS, ask them to re-write their guidelines...I'm sure they'll take your Stanley Tape measure method into account lol

Yea you admitted on here that you overmeasure. You literally admitted it. And coincidentally you always jackpot.

Hmmm...

The board can be abused like anything else. It's not meant to be cleared every two hours... some compaction is a natural part of snowfall totals. Wiping for every p-type change is probably also not the best practice if your "total" ends up being unreasonably higher than your maximum depth. Still, I'm not sure I understand the logic behind "a small minority using the board makes the record inconsistent, so it's better for everyone to come up with their own technique."

Hmmm...

*overmeasured

past tense and singular...

Happened 1 time...

Ptype changed 5 times in 24hrs

admitted it

only used my max depth after some discussion about the rare case of that event.

I use a hard plastic picnic table for my measurements, and am usually very close to rgwp96's numbers.  For instance, today we were only a 1/4" apart, and that could be due to wind.  I know it's not the best, but I never submit official reports anyway.

Tough to get consistent measurements, especially in a storm like this with the wind.  Once you factor in slant sticking, weenies, and deep snow, things really get tricky.

Looks like my OBS fell right in line with NWS up here... union center about 15-20 miles to my NE

I only have 10" less than you and my average annual total is probably 30 % of yours. And my elevation is 150 feet, not in Catskills.

I'm already above season average. Are you?
