4" of very wet snow so far today.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Cool pic!

Other than the little rain system late this weekend, the weather looks to continue to be pretty boring for this area for the foreseeable future.  Hopefully we can get our first measurable snow by mid Dec.

Desperately want a good December, just a weak 1-3" clipper around the eve of Christmas would be great, beginning of December looks kinda boring.

Here's and interesting fact Champaign-Urbana has recorded just a T of snow the last two Decembers COMBINED, with a staggering 8 degrees above normal. That T of snowfall in December 14' and 15' broke records for least snowiest December on record back to back years.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING. I hope everyone has a great day with their families.

On the weather front looking outside it now sure looks and feels like November. In fact today looks to be close to “average” as we expect highs in the lower 40’s (currently 43° at the airport and 43 here at my house. 43° is average for today) and the projected low in mid 30’s is a tad milder than the average low of 30° so like I said very typical for this time of year.

Precip underachieved here.  Only 0.25" compared to the 0.5-0.75" forecast by most of the models.

Today was about as awful as it gets.  All day drizzle, fog, dense overcast, and temps in the low 40s.

The theme continues today, but with the upper 40's as an early high temperature. Cloudiest Thanksgiving since 2010. This will be the case again tomorrow. Based on past observations, this Thanksgiving week looks to be rivaling against that week back in 1992 for the worst Thanksgiving week ever. Even the NWS looks like it's about to stick a fork into Saturday.

GRR (and many other locations) are still well above average (+4.7°) this November. Here in Grand Rapids this will be the 6th month in a row of above average temperatures.  And there has only been one month below average here in Grand Rapids in the last 15 (April 2016). And at this time the start of December may also be warmer than average so the question now is when the streak will end? The only other stretch this long of above average monthly temperatures was in 1920-1923 that string did “flip” but not until February of 1923.

Today is yet another very cloudy day here in west Michigan. The temperature here at my house is now at 39° and the latest reading at the airport is 37° the overnight low here and at the airport has been 35° as is typical in late November not much temperature swings from high to low.

With 4 days to go and a warm up on the way it now looks very good that November 2016 will end up being one of top 5 warmest on record here in Grand Rapids. As this time the mean for this month is now at 45.6° here are the current top 5 warmest Novembers here in GRR. 1. 1931-47.6° 2. 2001-46.8° 3. 2015-45.5° 4. 1975-44.7° 5. 1909-44.5°.  If this year indeed holds on this will be the first time we have had back to back top 5 warmest November in our recorded history (1893). I know that there are those who are looking for a major pattern change going into this winter and that may still be the case. But in the past very mild Novembers here in west Michigan that did not happen in 1. 1931/32) November to February warmer than average March colder than average snow fall for the season 41.1”. 2. 2001/02 while this was a snowy winter 105.2” much of that winters snow fell (52.0”) fell in the last 9 days of December and another 15” fell on 2 days in March with much of the winter just having very little snow on the ground. Then we had the 3 other winters where we did turn colder. Yes last winter did turn colder (but still warmer than average) in January and February. And there was 61.1” of snow fall.  The winter of 75/76 also turned colder for December and January. February and March were above average and there was 69.2” of snow and way back in 1909/10 the December to February were cold and it “flipped” to warm in March that winter and there was only 44.4” of snow reported that winter here in Grand Rapids. We shall see how this winter plays out.

Had 15.5" of snow the past week.  All that's left is a crusty 3".  Going to have to start over again after the rain this week.  Norms now are roughly 32/19...

You know it's a bad pattern when even you are having trouble retaining snow cover.
