Carvers Gap
Went to the Blue Ridge Parkway one week ago. Did the section from Asheville to Boone. Beautiful area. Peak was at 4,500' near Asheville and about 3,500 near Boone. This is going to rival the latest leaf change I have seen. Much, much later than last year. nrgjeff
Chattanooga leaves appear on schedule, if not a little fast, with the drought. Spring start to drought is the driver; recent drought is not too important. However we whiffed at Frozen Head SP last weekend, nowhere close to peak up there. Upper Plateau has closer to normal rain since spring. Thinking about trying again this weekend. Daytrip means no motel investment, but it is a long daytrip twice. At any rate I can see why John loves life up there, very pretty area.
Carvers Gap
The leaves here are changing quickly this week. The leaves look pretty good, even with the dry weather we have had. I think we will keep doing the Blue Ridge Parkway deal. With the its elevation and latitude changes, it was pretty easy to find leaves at peak. But man....driving at 4500'(maybe 5k), it gets a bit white-knuckled near Craggy Gardens. The orchard at Alta Pass is pretty awesome. Do your research as there are some nice hikes and multiple, multiple places for great pics.
Carvers Gap
Taken middle of last week. Transferred these pics from my iPhone. Our Nikon does a better job w/ detail and saturation levels for sure. Bald Knob (note this is further south near Asheville and the leaves have changed less/ 4,500') Grandfather Mountain (further north and close to leaf color close to peak / top of mountain is 5,945') Altapass (elevation 2,623')
nrgjeff
Yes the Blue Ridge is great. Since it is in the National Park system yes they have lots of side trails. I think people forget about the hikes. As for driving at 4,500 FT I recommend renting a sports car and taking turns fast!
Blue Ridge
Hit the Parkway last Sunday, entering at US 70 in Asheville and exiting at US 23 near Waynesville. The weather was ideal; drivers, not so much. The popular overlooks and trails were packed, but we encountered few people while hiking to Skinny Dip Falls. Flow, as expected, was unimpressive given the worsening drought. Personally, I think leaf color on the eastbound trek to Asheville on I-26 was far more impressive than on this stretch of the Parkway. Regardless, there is color to be found among the dry brown...
nrgjeff
I think your I-26 corridor did better with rain over the summer than the Parkway did. Meanwhile down in Chattanooga, what is that strange liquid falling from the sky?

John1122
GFS consolidated it's twins into one storm. This is the total snow though the period. We pick up 2-4 inches in about 8 days on this run, then a monster miller A about 4-5 days later. It was showing 2 miller A's 48 hours apart. John1122
That's never going to happen, which is why it's in banter, but it's maybe the most impressive non-DGEX clown map I've ever seen. That's wide spread 20+ inches in the area with a max of 28 near Crossville. So taking away the 2-4 from earlier, it's a wide spread 16-24 inch total from one storm. Carvers Gap
GFS 2 meter temp anomalies for day 15 on two consecutive runs. I know it should me no surprise. Definition of wild swing. 6z.......-33.5 w zero positive temp anomalies in the SE. Snow over much of the Valley from I-40 north. 12z......+32 w zero negative anomalies in the SE. Snow over Wisconsin. Unreal. I've seen it reported that they are from Tennessee but not from Sevier County. Such a senseless tragedy...
