Roger Smith
Just an alert that we have a discussion on-going in the Central/Western states subforum in a thread entitled California (and west coast) ... scroll over there for full details. Models are showing a low currently (00z) around 40N 140W undergoing explosive cyclogenesis overnight to reach 970 mb west of Newport OR by 12z and then track north-northeast into the north WA coast, across the Olympic peninsula into Vancouver Island and s.w. British Columbia. The NWS is predicting gusts to 100 mph on the Oregon coast morning and mid-day hours, and 75-80 in southwest WA early afternoon, spreading into Puget Sound mid to late afternoon (65-70 mph peak gusts) and into the north Sound (San Juan Islands, Bellingham) by early evening, still with potential for gusts to 70 mph. Damaging wind gusts are also expected in parts of southwestern B.C. exposed to the south and southwest. In past storms this has meant significant wind damage in White Rock, Surrey, Langley and the central Fraser valley around Maple Ridge and Mission. But all parts of greater Vancouver may see wind damage during the passage of the low center, if it tracks northwest of any given location. Friday, an almost as intense low brought strong wind gusts, some tree damage, and even an F-2 tornado (Manzanita, OR), and the Thursday-Friday rainfall totals around the region are generally in the range of 3 to 6 inches, which is weakening the root support system of large trees, meanwhile despite the gusts, deciduous trees are still 70-80 per cent in leaf which adds to the load in a windstorm situation. Widespread power outages have already taken place but far more can be expected if the Saturday storm, which formed from remnants of Typhoon Songda, reaches its full potential. So join the discussion over in the central/western forum, moderators feel free to move posts over there if they appear here. https://www.americanwx.com/bb/topic/48993-california-and-west-coast/?page=2#comment-4280084
