ADT is a fully automated, computerized version of a very old technique where someone looks at satellite pics and guesses storm intensity. It is infinitely less accurate than having an aircraft actually in the storm. In this particular case, the storm structure of Matthew (small eye obscured by intense convection) it "breaks" the automation of the ADT technique.
