It seems to be correlated with a blowup in convection around the northern section of the eye, and therefore might just be a transient effect of cold cirrus spreading from the recently enhanced convection. This could be a top 5 storm for locals if you stay for locations in coastal Florida, Georgia and possible south carolina. The barrier islands will take a beating and likely under water. Very healthy rains are showing up on the 6 GFS. What people need if you stay. Batteries, beer(imported), ice for the tub, twinkies &toilet paper. Tie down any loose furniture , check your rain gutters and home insurance policy if you own.

dan11295
Matthew may stay enough W to keep Nassau out of the worst winds actually. IR showing eye being covered is certainly just due to blowup of convection. Eye is fine on radar and recon shows pressure still dropping.

PackGrad05
the Euro and other models still show it getting dangerously close to the southern beaches of NC and especially Wilmington/Southport area. Wouldn't take much of a NW shift to cause even bigger problems there.

CoastalWx
The eye is there. Don't let the convection burst of cirrus fool you. You can see it clearing out on water vapor.

Anybody think this will make a run for Cat 5?
