In theory it snowed in the greens last night. Above 2500 feet it was impossible to tell however as every flake of snow was removed from its safe landing spot by the winds....

Damn.

The winds in town are insane...only a couple inches but it's like a ground blizzard at times.

seems like even the heavy paste even got scoured on exposed spots. definitely worked to reduce readable accumulation, but it had to go somewhere. just looking at the smuggs webcams, the village cam (1100') shows a lot more even coverage without exposed grass- actually "looks" like more snow fell there. Up at the main base area (1600'), the bare grass on knolls/water bar lips is readily apparent- obliterated compared to yesterday. at least its a more-dense medium.

Little in the way of winds at home as of my leaving for work.  I was glad for this as many trees were very weighted down with snow and I am hoping that maybe some will melt off during the day as opposed to wind helping take down the trees.

Strange ending to the storm for me.  No measurable snow.  It snowed all afternoon lightly, temps in the mid 30's.  Temp dropped below freezing early evening.  Just as snow started to coat the ground it  stopped.  Anything that fell sublimated away by sunrise.  Mountains and hills in all directions  are white.    Even down SE towards Rt 93 and Brian's area got snow.  Also not much wind.  Usually after a 29.05" type storm some backside roaring through the trees.  None of that. Highest gust on the Davis was 25mph from the west.

Really didn't mind missing the 1 or 2" places around me got.  Salt crews would have been out making a mess.  This way roads stay clean for a bit longer.

Event totals: 3.2” Snow/0.70” L.E.

I’ve added the midnight and morning observations for my site below.  There really wasn’t much in the way of snow overnight, but it was just starting to pick up when I was heading out this morning between 7:00 and 8:00 A.M.  I cleared all the boards as usual this morning, including the web cam board so that I’d be able to monitor today’s accumulations.  I can see that we’ve picked up another ~1.5” with the current round of activity, so I’ll run an analysis this evening on whatever I find.  I also stopped by Bolton Valley’s this morning, so I’ll write up a quick report from there and send that along soon.

Details from the 12:00 A.M. Waterbury observations:

New Snow: 1.6 inches

New Liquid: 0.15 inches

Snow/Water Ratio: 10.7

Snow Density: 9.4% H2O

Temperature: 28.9 F

Sky: Snow (2-15 mm flakes)

Snow at the stake: 2”

Details from the 6:00 A.M. Waterbury observations:

New Snow: 0.7 inches

New Liquid: 0.06 inches

Snow/Water Ratio: 11.7

Snow Density: 8.6% H2O

Temperature: 27.9 F

Sky: Flurries

Snow at the stake: 3”

I stopped in for a quick tour this morning at Bolton Valley, and below I’ve updated the accumulations I’ve seen for this storm.  With the snow levels dropping all the way to the valley bottoms there was a notable change in the snow cover there.  The base of the Bolton Valley Access Road at 340’ had an inch or two vs, the faint trace that was there yesterday afternoon.  From the Village elevations on up it looks like ~3” of new snow fell.  As soon as I got up into the main Village parking lot it was obvious that the wind had changed direction from what we’d encountered yesterday, and heavy snowfall of at least 1”/hr was moving in.  I had the back of my vehicle open for just a couple minutes while I changed boots, and being on the windward side I found my gear half covered with snow in just that amount of time.  Fairly heavy snow continued for the hour or so that I was up there, with small to moderate size flakes.

The new influx of snow and wind since yesterday was a bit of a mixed blessing with respect to snow quality.  There’s no doubt the base has been substantiated between the wind and additional snow – the wind moved snow around, packed it down a bit, and just generally gave the snowpack more girth.  Where I touched down in a couple of spots yesterday there would be no issue today.  With those changes came more inconsistency in the snow density due to wind crust, so turns weren’t as light, airy, or consistent as yesterday from a powder skier’s perspective.

Updated depths (yesterday afternoon à this morning) are below, and it looks like the resort has generally hit that 1-foot mark for settled depth on the upper mountain:

340”: Trace à 1-2”

1,000”: 1” à 3”

1,500”: 4” à 6”

2,000”: 5-7” à 8-10”

2,500”: 9” à 12”

2,700” 9”+ à 12”+

Now that I check Bolton Valley’s snow report, I see that they’re reporting 9-12” as of ~9:00 A.M. this morning, which seems right in line with what I encountered.

It is pounding hard at the bottom of the Bolton Access road on up. It was really awful road conditions on it to be sure. I turned back near the sugar house.

Yeah, I can imagine it’s coming down quite heavily up there.  It’s certainly picked up at the house today – it looks like ~3.5” of additional since this morning, presumably due to what look like much bigger flakes on the web cam.

It's pounding up here now.  Probably heaviest of the system.

Yeah this is legit +SN.  Very fluffy dendrites.

I went back up with my dad in his Subaru and it was hanging at 1/8 mile vis at times. I will post cell grabs later including video later. Definitely into double digit totals at the Bolton base area.

Probably twice as much as here.

Just had 1" in 45 minutes at the base and once I got down to the base of the Toll Road where it's more sheltered there was a healthy 6" of fluff.  Just need the wind up higher to relax and let these big flakes stack up.

Congrats powderfreak and jspin....looks like the snow hose is finally turning on for ya'll up further north after watching the Berkshires and S VT stack up early on:

Yeah this is the good stuff.  Having the low tuckin north of us and then waiting for it to meander was like watching paint dry.

I've got 4" down and snowing moderately to heavy at home.  JSpin's definitely double that though with his favorable gap position in the Spine.

Back home... if its doing this here, you can guess what's going on at the mountain.  Actually I bet J.Spin or someone on the west side is seeing 2"/hr or more at times.

Like usual we don't jackpot here but a nice wintry afternoon/evening in store.

4", which would almost tie last winter for the most snow at any one time.  Would love to grab 6".

My cell shots were blurry unfortunately but yeah 2 inches an hour is a safe bet in the band I was in. It wasn't quite the 3-4 inches an hour I saw when I came up and hit that mega upslope event but it was still solid.

Yeah I'd bet we were touching near that up at the ski area but down here in town its more like 1"/hr it seems judging by the car tops.

I will post the video later when I get home and that gives a bit better of an indication (also cell based). I wish I brought the Nikon out. Ahh well it was still fun to get into it.

I honestly can't believe I didn't really see this at least once all of last winter.  Its not involving rain, sleet or ZR...its not a quick burst of 2-3" before going to 8 hours of rain...its just nice dendrites falling steadily.  I could care less about the actual amount here (I just wanted to cover the grass which has been achieved) but man it just feels good to watch it snow!
