Anyone ever drive the whole length of the Blue Ridge Parkway? I have a family reunion in the Lexington KY area the weekend and plan on driving it on our way back up. We are going to start in Cherokee and drive the entire length to Shenandoah and if we have time might to Skyline Dr there. We are camping at the various park service campsites. Our first night we are going to stay at the My Pisgah campsite at an elevation of 5k. Plan on stopping at Mt Mitchell the highest peak east of the Mississippi river. Was surprised to find out its taller than Mt Washington at 6684 feet.

Anyone ever do it and have any tips of some cool places to stop?

Looks like the weather is going to be gorgeous. Clear skies with 70 for the highs and lower 40's for the lows at night. Here is the forecast for the weekend when I start my trip for the Asheville, NC area. The higher peaks are showing the mid 50's for highs.

From the AFD from that area.

A continental air mass building in its wake will spell
cooler and much drier weather across the region early next week. In
fact, next week is shaping up to be a rather classic fall weather
week.

I have driven it, though not all at once.  I usually go in the off seasons so I can't make some specific recommendations but I can tell you that you should probably plan on some traffic.  Not traffic jams but just be prepared to get behind someone who wants to travel at a slower speed than you.  The portion from Cherokee to north of the VA line is the most interesting, though there are sections in Virginia, particularly north of Roanoke that are interesting.  If you do plan on getting off, plan on winding roads back off the ridge.

Take the time to go up Mount Mitchell.  Despite their elevation they are not above treeline but at least you can say that you were at the highest point in the state and also east of the Black Hills.

Sounds like great weather and timing for a ride...I'm jealous, but I just came back from my own cross country trip so I'm OK.

Like MetHerb, I have done that drive, but not in peak leaf season.  It's really a scenic drive and well worth it if you are in that area and something I would recommend. I have heard that it can get really busy during OCT weekends, Columbus Day Weekend being the busiest of the year.  There are plenty of nice turnouts for viewing and to take a break if the traffic gets backed up.
