Yeah there's been some good moves this summer on several ASOS stations (we already have spent time on CON and BGR). I checked BDL to make sure it wasn't some regional thing in the valley there (like drought making the ASOS stations run warmer than the PWSs with all those downslope dandys they can get), but BDL had no sign of slippage. Same with BAF a few miles north. So I think we got another investigation with HFD. These guys might be producing a small trail of destruction this summer on our ASOS stations. lol

The other evidence that gives it away is how these biases really kick in during the warm season. So clearly whatever medium is near the ASOS is sensitive to increased IR radiation. You don't see these issues in winter when the amount of energy hitting earth at this latitude is much less.

Well the changes were apparently made on the ASOS stations this year after the winter....at various times, so we wouldn't know yet. It will be interesting to see if it carries into the cold season at all. I would agree that it would probably be less noticeable because of reasons you already stated.... blacktop/dark surfaces will take less advantage in winter with lower sun angle and shorter days...plus once you get snow pack on top of that surface, it's completely negated. I'll have to dig up that map that showed the anomaly. Besides, more people live in places like I do than a hilltop. To save me some time, does anyone know how to pull up a map of New England showing temperature anomalies for June? I know how to do that for the U.S. but the map I recall was just of New England. 1 hour ago, dendrite said: Unless you're radiating more than normal. A drier summer would help you with that versus a hilltop that stays mixed. Throw in a few more wet systems each month of the summer and ORH gets more of those days where their mins are cooler than you. You'd have to think that after 30+ months that you'd have a few of those months tossed in that would be reflected in the average. I'm actually not in a valley or a a hill top. I'm on the hillside 200' above the valley bottom and 200' below the top of the hill. Now, I'm also surrounded by 1,000-1,200' hills but I don't think it's true to say that I live in a valley. It's just a relatively high plateau compared to the CT River Valley.
dendrite
Well...whatever you want to call it. You either radiate well or you don't. And yes, some good radiating seasons are in the average. The point is that poor radiating seasons are also in the average as well. In a wet, crappy summer maybe 1000' has lower mins than you. In a dry summer with high diurnal swings maybe you have the lower mins. Obviously idk for sure in your case...I'm just throwing plausible ideas out there. There are plenty of places that radiate well that had above normal anomalies on that map so what he was basing his claim on is factually incorrect. POU has tied their all time record with 30 though. They have hit 30 days of 90F+ 4 times since 2002. Interestingly, ALB has hit 90 every year going back to 1874 at least once except for one year-- 1998 Number 90+ degree days this year: Albany NY: 15 days Glens Falls NY: 10 days...Poughkeepsie NY: 30 days Bennington VT: 4 days Pittsfield MA: 2 days
