the high minimums are mostly responsible for the high monthly averages...the heat has been spread out over two months now and going on three months...1983 was similar...it had higher maximums but lower minimums...the hottest 30 day period in 1983 was 80.9 and so far this year the hottest 30 days is 80.3...Both above the average of near 78.0...any year with a 30 day period 80.0 or higher is a hot summer to me and it is reflected in my electric bill...

Yeah, the high number of 70+ mins across the region and the record dewpoints were the most memorable part of the summer heat this year.

We couldn't quite close the deal on a 100 degree day through JJA. But the high ranking monthly averages were very impressive in July and August.

The 95 degree or greater days just looking at Newark was respectable though.

...........95/100 days

The drought out here is starting to get serious. Whole trees are staring to turn brown. Not a good situation on the south shore of Long Island

even here where we did well with the storms during the heat wave, it's drying out fast.  Models look bone dry the next 10 days too.

Did well in July, 5". Top 10 driest August, however.. thought we were fine for the summer. Sadly, grass is turning brown and crunchy again. Didn't expect that. Leaves are falling and trees are changing color.

How much did you get this month and last month, longbeach?

I do not have exact measurements. I am a plant/tree expert and can tell we are already near unprecedented grounds in my life time. If the next ten days go rain free I can see some actual damage, as in fully mature trees dying. Anything planted this year and not watered is already donezo

Even in northern suffolk there are signs of mature trees being damaged by the drought. We had a few inches in August, including 1.50 in last Saturday's monsoon, and even still we see the effects. I cant imagine how bad it is in parts of the south shore.

We had zero zero of that rain or any of the convection before it. We can handle drought better then you guys though. As we are far more prone climatilogically. But this is ubsurd. The few tulip trees we have left will be gone if we do not get a good soaking soon. The part of Nassau I live in is a sliver of the north shore hard wood forests due to good soils. We lost huge groves of old growth tulip trees (by far the tallest and biggest trees native to the island that live 500+ years and grow 150' plus) during the 98 late summer drought. There are still a few standing skeletons but for the most part there are no traces. There are a couple groves left that are in a wetter area water table wise. These trees are magnificent for our area just look up the queens giant the largest and oldest tree in nyc. I'm afraid we loose what little we have left in wantagh

Why does dan zarrow on 101.5 keep talking about wet Thursday and a prolonged rain event while tv mets and nws are just talking 30% scattered showers..what is the lowdown on Thusdays rains

The GFS and Euro are showing more than just scattered showers.
