now we can completely ignore central park's obs

Hasn't that been available for a while now?  It's not something new, it's even in OKX's hourly central park obs list:

The north shore of Long Island desperately needs one.  FRG ISP HWV FOK HTO are all mostly on the south side.

You could always check my weather station in Muttontown, a Davis VP2+.  Anemometer is 30 feet, 6 feet off roof ridge, and temp/rain gauge 6 feet off ground on tripod.  It's on CWOP and Weather Underground as well:

Yes this site's METARs have been available to all for several years.

I have noticed that there are some problems with the observations at KJRB. There seems to be a problem with the anemometer readings as every so often it records wind gusts of 40-50 MPH. This is on a day when winds at all other regional weather stations are recording 10-20 MPH. I also observed that on certain days when there's let's say a wind advisory and other stations i.e Central Park ,JFK, LaGuardia, Newark are all recording winds at 30-40 MPH at KJRB the winds are much weaker like 15-20 MPH. This is especially common when the winds are coming from a the West or NW. This is probably because large buildings in Manhattan on the W & NW side of heliport obstruct the wind. When winds are blowing in from the NE which is where the East River is the winds are usually higher. I also think that the landing and takeoff of helicopters which produces strong turbulence on the helipad likely causes these erroneous readings of 50 MPH that just occur out of the blue. The MesoWest website says that there's no quality control for the observations at KJRB. In conclusion  I wouldn't rely on wind reports from KJRB.

The instruments are better sited for use by helicopter pilots looking for cross winds than weather people. The anemometer is right on the edge of the helipad where it meets the water and is not even on a pole. It is essentially on the ground on the helipad, which is raised above the water.

There is a lot of wind tunneling in that vicinity.  I've routinely encountered vicious wind gusts just to the south of there closer to South Ferry on otherwise breezy but not abnormally windy days.
