Tim from Springfield (IL)
I only realized this late this afternoon/early evening as the earlier storms in Iowa are now approaching the STL metro (while the Cardinals are in a rain delay). And the cloud cover here in SPI around 6PM was very reminiscent of that night around that time as the derecho approached from the Upper MS valley, and rattled nerves here still shaken from 3/12/06. But 10 years ago tonight was the night of the St. Louis/Upper MS valley derecho event (which originated in MN that morning) and will forever be associated with a garbage can being blown toward an unfortunate fan at the new Busch Stadium during the Cardinals-Braves rain delay. (The game later went on and the Cards won, 8-3 in the midst of their topsy-turvy season that miraculously ended up with their 10th World Series title). Interestingly, I haven't come across anything in the Post-Dispatch on the 10-year anniversary of that week-long storm series--the only articles I've found in the P-D archives were from the 3rd anniversary in 2009: http://www.stltoday.com/suburban-journals/illinois/news/three-years-after-severe-weather-hit-communities-are-more-prepared/article_51c4d647-025e-564c-8b25-6ae5f1eb2b82.html NWS research paper on the 7/19/06 event: http://www.weather.gov/media/lmk/soo/DRAFT_19 July 2006_5h.pdf Wikipedia article (FWIW): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_wave_of_2006_derecho_series The infamous video of the garbage can crashing into a fan at Busch Stadium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW3B5ajSskA Video which includes time lapses of radar/satellite images: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbO7ik_pX6w There's also several other YouTube videos about the storm series as it affected the St. Louis area 10 years ago this week.
