vortex95
All federally-owned AWOS (most installed in the late 80s to the mid 90s ) are in the process of getting upgraded by the FAA. This means all sites will be just like ASOS with a full complement of remarks and climo data. So you will see things like PK WND, TS and precip start/end times, SLP, and WSHFT along with 1, 3, 6, and 24 hr precip groups. They will still be called AWOS. Here is a list of the 57 Federal AWOS sites that have been upgraded thus far. There are roughly 115 federal AWOS total in the U.S. The first one was upgraded on 8/6/15. All sites are scheduled to be upgraded by 9/30/17. moose81
Thanks so much for posting this info. I had noticed some of these sites getting upgraded and was curious. Do you have any info on what other sites will receive the upgrade and if there is a schedule of when each site will be upgraded?
dendrite
Unfortunately most of these stations in the northeast are reporting their 24hr max/mins at the wrong time. It seems they're stuck on local midnight instead of EST. LCI, RUT, LEW, BHB, and SFM all report the 4SXXXSNNN at 4Z. WVL is the lone site doing it at 5Z. I am working on getting a list of those left to be upgraded. I do have a list for those left to be upgraded in the NWS Southern Region. I believe there are about 115 Federal AWOS in all.
