Jack Forst Big Boulder ski resort had their opening today. A November opening in PA is pretty incredible.

I remember going on my first ski trip at Big Boulder back in 1978 when I was a junior in high school.  I think it may have been before the February blizzard (probably January).  I do remember it was sunny with temps above freezing that day, meaning that the snow at the top of the trails was compacting, melting, and refreezing to form a thick sheet of ice with water on top.  So every time someone hopped off the chair lift, they immediately slid and fell backwards, forcing them to stop the lift each time to get the fallen person out of the way. :lmao:

Do you still ski? I find JFBB to take really nice care of their snow and can avoid really dangerous conditions for the most part. Although I might not be the best judge because there aren't many trails I think twice about these days. I feel confident about the winter. Everything is proceeding as planned. There is a such thing as the piece coming together to early.

Nope.  Bum knee ruled that out.  I remember the following January going to Tamiment Resorts (now closed the past 10 years) for a senior class trip in January and it drizzled the whole weekend with temps in the 40s, so the snow pack was nothing but a glacier with water on top.  Some folks were able to go ice skating in the covered rink but otherwise it ended up being a mostly indoors trip.  Except for a few notable late-70s blizzards, the '70s were horrible for snow.  I remember an uncle had promised to take me and my siblings to go sledding at Burholme Park during the winter of 1974.  When he did finally take us to at least show us what it looked like, unfortunately the park was all green grass and 60F. :axe:

It will be interesting to see what the PV will do this winter.  We still have time for that to play out though.

The seventies always sound like such a depressing time to be alive... My Dad blew his platella in a volleyball accident four years ago he has given up on skiing but wants to try boarding now.

It was frustrating.  The few times we had some halfway decent snow to sled on or try to make a snow fort in, it was usually the powdery stuff (low moisture content) so it didn't compact well.  It wasn't until the '78/'79 blizzards that we got decent enough (and moisture-rich enough) snow to make respectable snowmen, etc. But by then I was about to go off to college (in W. Mass, which never really got the type of now that E. Mass/Boston got)!

I just bottomed out at 28.8F this morning.... lowest so far this season IMBY and almost a hard freeze. Saw some frost on the grass.

News about contests ...

Hello, I am dropping into all regional forum banter or chat threads to post some information about contests that you may find interesting.

On the general forum of American Weather Forums, we have a temperature forecast contest that has been going on here since Eastern gave birth to American Weather. We would welcome some new entrants for 2017; the contest is simple to enter and just takes a minute once you've decided on your forecasts. There are nine locations across the U.S. including DCA, NYC and BOS. We predict anomalies from 1981-2010 normals, and the forecasts are scored promptly at the end of each month. I am drawing your attention to the contest a month in advance of the new contest year for two reasons -- (1) people get very busy and distracted around New Years, and (2) the contest has a four-seasons component for the 12 months starting Dec 2016. So this is a good month to jump in and get in a practice round before 2017. Some of the regulars in the contest include well-known forum members that you'll recognize, and the standards are pretty high (albeit I am dragging them down somewhat). So it's a good place to test out your forecasting insights against some of the better forecasters on American Weather. Here's a portal into that forecast contest thread ...

Meanwhile, one other contest I can recommend if you want to make a snowfall forecast for 25 locations in the northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states for Dec to Mar winter 2016-17. This is a separate website that runs just this contest and storm forecast contests that you can enter with e-mail notification provided to remind you if a storm is brewing. Once again, you would recognize a few names in that contest (recent years have seen 15-20 regular participants) and the standards are pretty good, once again an ideal place to work on your forecasting or show it off depending on where things are at.

That's the link for the Northeast U.S. snowfall contest website.

Just to complete the tour, you may know that the central/western forum is the place to go for annual severe weather forecasts (most people make them in the winter months, the 2017 thread will probably open up soon). And make a note that there's an annual North Atlantic hurricane forecast contest also in the general forum here at Am-Wx. I organize that one as well, and usually run an announcement thread in May.

Well, enjoy your winter and maybe we'll see some (more) of your sub-forum members taking part.

Our DTN computer at work is showing something in the long range as well around the 14th of Dec.

The door is open a little bit for something in the Dec 11-14 window but overall it is going to be hard to pull anything other than a snow quick to rain type deal with a +NAO -PNA regime. About to kickoff December things are not looking as good as they did a couple weeks ago, the cold December outlooks could be in trouble.

Most months have averaged above normal in varying degrees, no reason tho think this will be different. This is becoming more than a trend, it is the new normal.
