Up early for work and stout weather for May moving in

Noted that both Grandfather, Roan/Yellow mountain and Beech running at 33 to 34 with winds gusting to 46

Mitchell is at 28

AT THE MID LEVELS...THE CORE OF A CLOSED LOW WILL PASS OVER THE

WESTERN CAROLINAS THIS AFTERNOON...PASSING EAST THIS EVENING. AT THE

SFC...THE FOOTHILLS AND PIEDMONT WILL REMAIN BETWEEN LOW PRESSURE

CENTERED NEAR THE NC OUTERBANKS AND HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE GREAT

PLAINS. THIS PATTERN WILL PROVIDE THE REGION WITH NW WINDS AND DEEP

MIXING. MOMENTUM TRANSFER FROM AS DEEP AS 10 KFT APPEARS POSSIBLE

THIS AFTERNOON. I WILL FEATURE GUSTS FOR ALL SITES 3 TO 4 HOURS

FOLLOWING SUNRISE. STEEP LAPSE RATES AND MARGINAL FORCING MAY YIELD

SCT SHRAS DURING THE AFTERNOON TO EARLY EVENING. WINDS ARE FORECAST

TO WEAKEN TO 6 TO 10 KTS BETWEEN 23Z TO 2Z.

OTHERWISE...A VIGOROUS COMPACT UPPER LOW WILL DROP SOUTH FROM THE SW

GREAT LAKES REGION TO THE NC MTNS BY MIDDAY THURSDAY. STRONG 850 MB

CAA WITHIN 30-40 KT OF FLOW WILL BRING 850 TEMPS DOWN TO AROUND 0C.

THIS TRANSLATES TO SNOW LEVELS FALLING TO AROUND 5000 FT OR SO

OVERNIGHT. SO A FEW FLAKES OF SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE...BUT NOT

EXPECTING ANYTHING MORE THAN AN INCH OR TWO ON THE HIGHEST PEAKS.

THE LINE OF SHOWERS WILL FIZZLE AT IT CROSSES THE MTNS...BUT A FEW

LINGERING SHOWERS OR SPRINKLES WILL BE POSSIBLE OUT ACRS THE NC

FOOTHILLS AND PIEDMONT. TEMPS WILL A COUPLE CATEGORIES BELOW

NORMAL...AND UP TO 10 DEG BELOW NORMAL ON THE HIGHEST PEAKS.

...LIGHT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS EXPECTED ACROSS THE NORTHERN NORTH

CAROLINA MOUNTAINS TONIGHT...

A DEEP LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM OVER THE CENTRAL CAROLINAS THIS EVENING

IS DRIVING A BAND OF MOISTURE SOUTHWARD ALONG THE SOUTHERN

APPALACHIANS. THIS MOISTURE WILL INTERACT WITH UNSEASONABLY COLD

AIR IN PLACE AT THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS TO PRODUCE SOME LIGHT SNOW

ACCUMULATIONS THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT. WHILE TEMPERATURES ARE

EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN THE UPPER 30S TO AROUND 40 IN THE MOUNTAIN

VALLEYS...TEMPERATURES MAY FALL TO NEAR OR BELOW THE FREEZING

MARK AT ELEVATIONS ABOVE 4500 FEET. THE VALLEYS AND SLOPES COULD

SEE SPOTTY SNOW SHOWERS MIX IN AT TIMES...BUT THE PRECIPITATION

SHOULD FALL MAINLY AS RAIN IN THESE AREAS. HOWEVER...THE HIGHER

RIDGE TOPS COULD SEE MORE PRECIPITATION FALL AS SNOW...WITH

MAINLY SNOW EXPECTED AT ELEVATIONS AT OR ABOVE 5000 FEET.

SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES WILL BE POSSIBLE AT THESE

HIGHER ELEVATIONS...AND TEMPERATURES HOVERING AT OR BELOW THE

A few snow showers during the day but has picked up significantly in the past couple of hours. I have a dusting on elevated surfaces but not much on the ground yet. If it keeps snowing this hard it won't be long before it does. Temps down to 33.2. Can't believe it's May 5 and I'm sitting here sippin' brandy by the fire, watching it snow.

Making the move to the beach house this weekend, a fitting way to go out I guess

Awesome Snojoe.

Have you noticed the precip over WV? Seems to be progressing toward the TN NC mountains. Surprise!?

Maybe. It's snowing hard now. Looks like the picture Bill posted of Beech around here. I was expecting some flakes today, but not this.

Most won't get the reference.

I've named this winter storm Cinco De Snow Yo.

13.2" of snow fell in May 1992 on @BeechMountainNC , the 3" tonight is the most since then. #wncwx

That 1992 storm was the first time I ever went cross-country skiing.  It was on the Blue Ridge Parkway not far from the near 50" of snow on Mt. Pisgah.  IIRC nothing but rain in Asheville out the 1992 storm; we did get a little sleet out of the 2016 storm.
