Hoosier
Thought I did an anniversary post about this one before but I can't seem to find it. Anyway, the preceding day featured a tornado outbreak in the KS/OK area, before shifting into our region. This system had a negatively tilted upper level wave and a pretty deep surface low. 21z maps from March 27, 1991: One of the notable aspects of this system is how far north tornadoes occurred given the time of year, and not just weaker ones. As you can see, there were a couple F3s pretty far north in Michigan. Wind and hail reports are also plotted, with wind speeds plotted where available. The wind speeds are in knots, which shows that there are a number of significant wind reports (75+ mph), including a 73 kt/84 mph wind gust measured at ORD. Hoosier
When I was putting this together and saw the surface/upper level maps, I thought to myself that it kinda looks like the setup progged for this Wednesday and Thursday...sure enough, 3/27/91 was one of the CIPS analogs from the 00z GFS. Stebo
Instability for that event was 1500 to 2500 J/kg per the cips analog page at 18z dropping down to 1000 to 1500 J/kg at 00z
Hoosier
Instability for that event was 1500 to 2500 J/kg per the cips analog page at 18z dropping down to 1000 to 1500 J/kg at 00z Looking at obs/maps, 60 degree dewpoints made it into far southern WI and into much of lower Michigan. Going to need the midweek system to come in on the slower end to have any chance at getting something close to that.
cyclone77
Couple vids about this event.. First, an extremely short video from TWC This is a pretty cool vid that focuses on the Lemont IL tornado. Also a nice look at some radar imagery..
Hoosier
Anniversary day. The Lemont tornado is really the last (E)F3+ to happen in the immediate Chicago metro area (subjective definition but I think it's a fair assessment), which is a longer time interval than what has usually happened. Here is a map of (E)F3+ that have occurred from 3/27/1991 through the end of 2015:
