Raven94 I live in your republican md and there are things I love, the weather, the scenery, laid back atmosphere. And there are some great people here too. But at the same time what about the politics of this area are you proud of? I hear the N word all the time. Have to drive by Idiots who fly the confederate flag like some kind of red neck tramp stamp. I have heard locals bragging about our lack of black people as if they are a disease. Just the other day at the gas station some moron decides for no reason that I want to hear his rant about "that damn socialist idiot president" my wife was like wtf was that about. And he looks at me like I'm the problem when I just said I don't care to talk about OUR president that disrespectfully. Worse they confide this garbage to me thinking that because I look like them and live here that I most be inflicted with the same bigotry they suffer from. I'll take the scenery and weather but you can keep your culture and republicanism.

Politics is and political opinions are multi faceted. What you describe is a truthful and antidotal manifestation of one aspect of a political philosophy filtered through an overly simplistic interpretation and musing of an ill informed individual. The sentiments disparaging the president by the individual you described appear to be motivated by and the result of poor education and racism.

On the other hand there are those who resent the current president for purely policy reasons. Some of the harshest critics of the president are African American law enforcement and military personnel.

Political sentiment is motivated by individual experience , perspective, and bias . Never one size fits all. There is no objective right or wrong. That is why politics is divisive. Everyone who supports a particular candidate or philosophy could be motivated by a variety of competing factors. Some nefarious others humanistic.

There are confederate flying households that support democratic platforms as well. An ingrained mindset in many blue collar rust belt regions has been that republicans are for the "rich" and that no matter what the vote should be pro union and democratic. These "democrats" are not "progressives" but economic consumers of the party.

In this forum we are united by weather and political discussion is poison and divisive. Plenty of intelligent well meaning individuals will vote for Clinton, and conversely for Trump. Both candidates are tremendously flawed. Unfortunately, at this point they appear to be the only game in town. Pick your poison as your conscience dictates, but do not recriminate those who do not share in your final analysis.

We need a fluke late season KU to reunite the forum. You know it's a bad close to the season when all we have is political banter!!!!

I think part of the reason for that is the unprecedented craziness of this election cycle. I mean, we literally have a candidate making RR level comments at a presidential debate.

I'm all in for another KU...or upper 70s. I haven't officially given up the ghost yet :)

I do the politics/policy stuff all day. More so with the cycle almost in full swing. I just want a little peace and/or relentless but hilarious trolling when I get home and catch up. Bob nailed it earlier. Had me rolling. Ers was great too.

Snowflakes the size of lawn chairs. It gets me every time.

I was reading an AFD one time and saw the expression "snowflakes the size of volkswagons". I liked that one :P

I was actually wondering how bad the politics is in Carroll county... when we went to Gettysburg a few months ago, I saw a Confederate flag on the way there while passing through Carroll county, and sensed that the area may be up to no good.  If the racist crap you're talking about is typical up your way, then damn... I don't know if the area would be worth it for me in spite of the amazing scenery and great winter climo. That kind of ignorance is painful.

I used to live up there years ago and the racist stuff is there, more than you would expect. I would think it would be different now, but in some areas that stuff hangs on. I believe there was an active kkk group in the area when I lived there. Overall, like any local region, you will have the stupid/ignorant/scary element. The topography in Carroll County is the most picturesque you will find anywhere outside of the mountains in MD. I also drove up through Westminster to Gettysburg recently. That stretch north of Westminster is gorgeous. Not sure I could live there now though. The eastern shore is similar...very rural, and has its share of folks that are not "my kind of people". Overall its more culturally diverse, especially in towns like Easton, St Michaels, and of course the beach areas.

like I said there are plenty of good people here. It's no worse then any other rural area that I have lived or spent time and it's better then a few. Most people are actually wonderful and not like that but what I find unfortunate is that in rural areas there seems to be a culture of tolerance for intolerance. Even though the majority don't share their views the 30% or so who do are given more freedom to express their ignorance and hate without any social consequences. If you went around spewing the n word all the time in more multicultural places I have lived you would quickly be shunned and stigmatized and probably popped in the face. I don't have much tolerance for intolerance and I don't know why so many in these rural areas who are good people seem to think they have to put up with someone saying crap they know is wrong and just shake their head and keep it to themselves. I always say something. I don't try to get into politolical debates just usually to the effect of "I am not a bigot so please keep your racist thought to yourself". And yes that has lead to problems at times because the truth hurts and some of these people unfortunately are used to being allowed to say this stuff with no pushback. If the majority here that did not share their views would tell them that on the regular perhaps they would keep it to themselves like in less rural places. As for if its worth it, like I said most here are good people and on a daily basis I have no problems living here. Just have to deal with the random idiots sometime. But it's not like the city has no problems either. Just different problems.

well stated and good points. Plus entirely accurate. As a sociologist I should have been more careful not to fishbowl complex issues but we could write a war and peace novel length discussion and still not get to all the different nuanced issues affecting politics right now. See my post above to fozz to see I don't actually dislike the people here in general. I was just trying to reply to raven94 regarding a very specific comment implying that rural md is somehow superior to urban areas and I wanted to point out this is not some cultural utopia free of problems. People have some really ignorant views in the city too but when it comes to this one they just tend to keep it to themselves more. That is at least a step because when ignorance is given space to grow and feel legitimized people feed off each other and it gets uglier and sometimes leads to racist action instead of just racist thought. The real solution would be if we could over time eradicate that kind of hateful divisive ideology but that's a long ways away. As a whole currently I think we as a country tolerate some things that should have no place in civilization. I know that's tricky because we have to protect our rights and freedoms of expression but like I said to fozz socially stigmatizing these sentiments in rural areas like they do in more diverse ones would go a long way to beginning to fix this particular problem.

As for politics I have issues with Obama at times but wouldn't start a critique with "that damn socialist". in general I think our politics has become infected with a culture war to an extent and certain economic interests fuel it and use it to their advantage. But in real governing issues most are closer then we think. But we are too busy fighting over ideological issues we can't agree on to get to compromising and governing on the majority of important issues we could. If you remove party identity from most issues, like healthcare, and just ask people what they want, we find people aren't that far apart. But then they are put in a room and identified as liberals and conservatives and suddenly all they can do is fight. It's unfortunate. I have people in my department who I can't agree on anything ideologically with but when it's time to get collaborative planning done I have no problem focusing on the task and getting it done.

Why the hell are politics being discussed here? We have a forum for it. Go there. Start a thread. Talk yourselves blue.

Obviously because enough people do seem to want to make political comments. I stopped posting on it then I come back a day later and all it is is politics. Every post I've made was a direct response to someone else. I have no problem taking it somewhere else but not if it means raben94 or anyone else can then be free to post something ignorant and not get a rebuttal. If mods decide to delete it all and move it to politics that won't bother me at all. Since this does bother some I won't start new politics rants and would encourage others who want to engage to move over there too but I'm not going to ignore comments made if they are allowed to be in here.

what are the approved topics for "banter" anyways?

I agree its generally better to take the political discussions elsewhere. But I also completely agree with your point that when some ignoramus randomly and inappropriately injects politics into a discussion with a provocative tone, its likely going to get a response. If the forum rules do not permit it, then a comment such as the one R94 made should be deleted and warnings given.

I was bored and started going through my Pepco data. Good lord.

My lowest energy consumption was during the blowtorch of May 2015

Somewhere EastCoast NPZ is reading this, imagining life in my cozy abode, and losing his sh*t

ETA: Had to lose the gif :(

ETA II: A kosher GIF of EastCoast NPZ losing his sh*t

  Another good one.

Serously, though; what is wrong with you?  Aren't you from up NE?

I'm fine with a little bit of politics here... such as a bit of light commentary on a current event or talking about a particular area of the mid-Atlantic and the people there. I think the red line should be drawn where it gets into direct arguments about political topics.... that's what PR is for.

But shutting down anything approaching politics is excessive.

I think the occasional Trump reference is going to be made regardless. At this point, how can it not lol.

I wonder if you were so passionate about showing respect for the President from 2000 - 2008, because there was never a president more vilified by the majority of the press and a rather large segment of the population than W.

So you had 1 trip through Carroll County on a road leading to the town where the most famous battle of the Civil War took place and seeing 1 Confederate flag gave you the sense that the area is full of racists? Ever think you've become just as bad as the people you criticize?

Winner.

And they speak of intolerance?  He sees one Confederate flag and immediately "senses" that an entire area is up to no good.  I guess this is somehow different than seeing a black man walking through a mostly-white neighborhood as being up to no good.

I just tried the Kujo from Flying Dog last night. Loved it. I have had several of their beers and liked them all, but never tried that one. Love stouts in general, and Imperial stouts even more. Add in coffee or chocolate and you have the perfect beer for a cold night.

So, anyone think the lil clipper tonight may surprise? Looks like a short window and a small area, but I think someone could see an inch.

Temps look pretty crappy and qpf very light in general. Even if a tenth or more falls it will have a hard to near impossible time sticking.

Last night a buddy came over to hang out and brought a six pack of Left Hand's Hard Wired Nitro Coffee Porter. Terrific stuff.

In general, I really like Left Hand's brews.

Yeah its low probability, but it comes overnight, and there could be a couple hours where it comes down at a moderate intensity with temps in the low 30s. Could just as easily be 37 with light rain.

I have had a couple of theirs and really liked them. Had the milk stout and one other, might have been a lager. Need to try that coffee porter though that sounds awesome.

If you like Flying Dog's stuff you should make it a point to go to their brewery and tasting room. They've got several beers that they only offer there.

And I can't say enough about how good JonJon's beers are out at Stumptown Ales. I'm jealous of the DC crowd because of the easy access to Rte 55. Right now the highway basically dead ends at the brewery.

I had plenty of policy issues with W but I never started a criticism with "that idiot". That is not to say I didn't make passionate criticism of policy but there is a way to do so in a respectful manner. When you make your argument about policy and not personal it strengthens the validity of your point. I would never allow one of my debate teams to start a critique with "that idiot" or any similar remark. Obama is not perfect and I'm willing to entertain valid criticism but usually when it starts with that idiot what follows lacks much substance.

I never said that everyone in Carroll county is racist... obviously that would be a a ridiculous assertion, and there are likely some great people there, but it gave me the feeling that some people in that area are close-minded and prejudiced, and that such a hateful symbol is tolerated there. Psuhoffman's post confirmed my suspicions.
