So you had 1 trip through Carroll County on a road leading to the town where the most famous battle of the Civil War took place and seeing 1 Confederate flag gave you the sense that the area is full of racists? Ever think you've become just as bad as the people you criticize?

Fozz may have said it in a less then delicate way, and ive said the vast majority of people here are wonderful, it's a very friendly area overall, but to pretend there isn't any problem at all with racism around here is also disingenuous. Everywhere has their problems though and it's not out of control and most here have nothing to do with it, but it's here and I run into it from time to time.

I was actually wondering how bad the politics is in Carroll county... when we went to Gettysburg a few months ago, I saw a Confederate flag on the way there while passing through Carroll county, and sensed that the area may be up to no good. If the racist crap you're talking about is typical up your way, then damn... I don't know if the area would be worth it for me in spite of the amazing scenery and great winter climo. That kind of ignorance is painful.

The Confederate flags are sickening. I can't express how much I hate seeing them. There has been an emergence of them that started with all the banning of the flag. In our modern world that flag represents one thing and one thing only and that is hate.

As far as living here the positives way outweigh the old regime mentality here. The area is much more diversified than in years past and should continue to evolve towards a more accepting environment as the older generation grows smaller.

I could say a lot more but I'll leave it alone.

Perhaps I should've said it differently.... the Confederate flag and the n-word especially scare me, but I also shouldn't generalize an entire region, and it wasn't my intention though to some it sounded that way.

I guess it's like York/Lancaster county in PA.... people are generally nice and friendly, but a few are openly intolerant

It's crazy how much my beer tastes have changed over the last 25 years. I was all about the cheapest and most poundable until I moved to CO in 92. Then I discovered the Breck Brewery and couldn't get enough IPA and Porters. Then new Belgium got popular and it was Fat Tire until I got fat. Literally.

When I moved back from CO in 99 I got back into the cheap American light stuff because micros were bad for my waistline. As my beer consumption dropped off as I got older it was back to various micros and bud light. Over the last 5 years I've developed a taste for euro pilsner and lager. I like the crisp bite of beers like Grolsch and Urquell. They are the only beers I drink nowadays for the most part. But I don't drink many beers anymore. A couple a week. Keeping weight off in your mid 40's ain't easy and beer doesn't help. I've managed to get within 10 pounds of my early 20's weight and trying to stay there or lower. Life has tradeoffs and getting old sucks. Lol

The bulge has become a constant battle recently. It's hard for me to know exactly where I want my weight to be because in my 20's and early 30's I was racing bicycles competively so my weight was ridiculously low. Since then, I've gradually gained weight and in the past ten years went past the ideal benchmark. I'm not a big framed guy and 180 is too much. I'm thinking 165 is a good place to be but man, I love cooking and sitting down to a good meal and a big glass of wine or beer.

I need some warm weather to get back to a regular running and biking schedule because there is no way I'm giving up my home made pizzas, pastas, and brews.

I'm not ready to get old :(

The drop off from what I could do in college and what I can do now is horrifying.

After my crappy physical last May (high cholesterol/blood pressure/20 lbs overweight) I've turned it all around pretty quick. Dropped 18 lbs and cholesterol not perfect yet but no need for meds so a victory so far there.

I feel great. I can hike 10 miles no prob. Ride my bike for 25 miles. I've played some pickup basketball and left some guys in the dust and I was never a fast runner. Another side benefit it I would suffer from heartburn more often than I liked. Completely gone now.

The thing about getting older that I've learned is you can't get away with stuff as easily or at all. But you can totally feel healthy and active. Just requires a lot more discipline. You're only as old as you allow yourself to get. I got lazy for a decade and paid a price. Wasn't nearly as hard to fix as I though. Mostly giving up beer kinda sucks though. Lol

I love beer but I also like keeping my boyish figure lol. Light beer is garbage if you are truly a beer lover obviously. I go for mostly ales, but not a big fan of IPAs. I prefer porters and stouts in general. I like beer with flavor- gotta have some food value, but also it has to have bang for the buck. One reason I like Imperials. I only drink a couple beers at a time, so an abv of 7-10 works nice lol.

I'm 6-2 and peaked at 228 last year. It was a slow process. Every physical was like 3lbs extra every year. I made a massive lifestyle change and stuck to it. My diet is near perfect (100% attributable to my wife). It's become second nature. Piles of veggies and fruits and lean meats. But the way my wife cooks is flavor explosion stuff with all kinds of ethnic twists. I'm spoiled...and thankful.

My doc said last year that I was going to be a prime candidate for a heart attack in my 50s if I didn't make some changes. Scared the S out of me honestly.

Raven94 I live in your republican md and there are things I love, the weather, the scenery, laid back atmosphere. And there are some great people here too. But at the same time what about the politics of this area are you proud of? I hear the N word all the time. Have to drive by Idiots who fly the confederate flag like some kind of red neck tramp stamp. I have heard locals bragging about our lack of black people as if they are a disease. Just the other day at the gas station some moron decides for no reason that I want to hear his rant about "that damn socialist idiot president" my wife was like wtf was that about. And he looks at me like I'm the problem when I just said I don't care to talk about OUR president that disrespectfully. Worse they confide this garbage to me thinking that because I look like them and live here that I most be inflicted with the same bigotry they suffer from. I'll take the scenery and weather but you can keep your culture and republicanism.

As someone who hangs around Westminster most of the time I can say that is not the norm or close to it.  I would be surprised if I heard any thing like that while out in the general public.  I can't remember the last time I heard someone say the N word out in the open or even in a store/bar/restaurant type thing.   I think Westminster is much more cosmopolitan compared to the Manchester area.  Fozz should at least consider around Westminster if he is seriously thinking of moving.  Besides being more multicultural it is a nice snowtown too Fozz.

Fat Tire was and still is my favorite beer of all time.  Ever since I closed the Vail season down three years running with my brother and a bunch of friends back in the 90's.  I was super happy to see NewBelgium start selling east of the Mississippi a few years ago.  Running helps to keep that dreaded 40+ weight off for me but it's deliberate and intentional work for sure...

I enjoy cooking and had gotten lazy until recently, and am now doing better with cooking meals. Eating healthier has to be a priority for me, but I also have to be better about saying when I've had enough. It doesn't matter how healthy I eat if I eat more than is necessary.

Fortunately, even in my early 50's, I can still bike, run, and hike with my younger friends. But I know that if I'm not careful, at my age it'll slip away almost overnight.

5'11" and hit 193 before I started walking/hiking and eating a BIT better three years ago, the eating thing I fail at miserably still haha!

But I now run 165-170 (graduated HS at 165) and like you I have no issues health wise now.

The right hand used to be for turning the pages, but in the past twenty years it's for clicking the mouse.

:)

LOL, yep

Yep, same age here, most people I hike with are in their 20's and 30's and I enjoy it greatly.

Yeah, my gf is significantly younger and we enjoy traveling and hiking, so I have to stay a step ahead of her so she doesn't realize I'm an old goat.

I wonder if anyone would be interested in a mid-Atlantic "little loser" competition? Just a thread where we can check in and "boast" of our daily successes and accomplishments. Be nice to have a little company I'm the motivation department, especially since beach weather will be here before we know it.

agree. Westminster is a metropolis compared to Manchester. It's also much more diverse then a lot of the more remote parts of the county.

I had plenty of policy issues with W but I never started a criticism with "that idiot". That is not to say I didn't make passionate criticism of policy but there is a way to do so in a respectful manner. When you make your argument about policy and not personal it strengthens the validity of your point. I would never allow one of my debate teams to start a critique with "that idiot" or any similar remark. Obama is not perfect and I'm willing to entertain valid criticism but usually when it starts with that idiot what follows lacks much substance.

Fair enough.

I think part of the reason for that is the unprecedented craziness of this election cycle. I mean, we literally have a candidate making RR level comments at a presidential debate.

Lol don't be jealous you don't make those comments, even though i have more brains in my pants than you have in your entire body.
