So far...

The good:

Well above average snowfall

HECS

Below zero temp

The bad:

No sustained cold

No long lasting snow cover

The ugly:

Record warm December

Overall grade: A

Looking at the history of my area this was a great winter despite the lack of sustained cold and snowcover.

F

No sustained cold

No sustained snow pack

No warning level snow event

Less than 10" seasonal total ( unless a miracle occurs)

I don't find the 2-3 "extreme" cold days we had enough to boost my mark for this winter from a complete and utter failure

In reality almost everyone's grades for this board are based off 3 days out of an entire winter.... 2 days of cold, and 1 HECS snowstorm

The grade for your area is fair.

In reality those 3 days included a 2' snowstorm, a 10" snowstorm which brought my area to well above averge and a below zero low. Even if we set the record for warmest winter ever, the above makes this a historic winter during a super nino for NYC and LI.

I'd say B/B+. I did well snow-wise, but so many of the storms were just disappointments. Even the blizzard, though it delivered for my area, lacked any anticipatory excitement. Still, it could've been worse.

Downgrading bc your 2' snowstorm didn't get you pumped up enough? Christ. You LI guys should know better! Lol

Anyway I'm not gonna judge you guys ;) Enjoy the thread.

Wouldn't disagree... I just find it amazing the extremes that made up this winter, and the drastic differences within a 100 miles radius

True. I felt like a schmuck writing that post given that other's winters were craptastic at best, but still, UCS said it very well: Our winter consisted of three disparate events, so much so, it was more like a spring with a few anomalously cold days than a winter that was anomalously warm.

The high grades are going to be based on what you said. The average/low grades are going to be based on the winter as a whole.

It goes without saying that anyone north of Putnam and Rockland is probably going to say F. I've had 6 days in the 60's or above (including a 70+), many more days in the 50's, about 6" of snow, and have not had any snowcover for longer than a day (not including the sleet storm in late December). Honestly, I don't see how it could be any worse for an interior northeast locale.

The blizzard in the NYC metro area was the most perfect snow event for a non-mountainous region that I've even seen.

It featured near continuous heavy snow for 24 hours with no dry slot or mixing anxiety.  Snowfall forecasts increased in the run up to the storm, building anticipation and excitement.  It was a daytime, weekend, long duration, record breaking event.   Just perfect for a snow enthusiast to really really enjoy.

That event alone should give the entire winter a big boost for those lucky enough to experience it.

Just gonna post this in here bc it's well thought out.

Sustained snowpack, months averaging below normal, multiple moderate snowfalls.

This season doesn't hold a candle to 14-15, 13-14, or 10-11 when we had week after week of snowstorms, deep snow cover, and cold temperatures. A grading system has to take into account how "wintry" a winter is. This winter was a one-storm winter with one cold night; the rest of the season was a snowless torch featuring bare ground and days of 50s and 60s. How could this be an A grade?

I would grade this winter a C. In terms of pros, we had an incredible HECS with 24-30" areawide and multiple hours of blizzard conditions, and NYC did record its first subzero temperature since 1/1994. The blizzard and the 4-8" snowstorm in early February ensure that most coastal areas have had near average snowfall.

Cons include September-like warmth in December, the rapid meltdown of the blizzard, no sustained snowpack, repeated cutters in February after a progged favorable pattern, and no months with below normal temperatures. It rarely felt like deep winter this year, except for the blizzard and the day after, and the night below zero.

Grade pending: C (C- if March stinks, up to a B- if we have a great March, which I doubt...)

Despite an anomalous precipitation event (a mid-winter gift) and anomalous temperature event (perfect trajectories miracle) , one had to spend most of his  time waiting for something to happen this winter.   Even computer generated fantasy events have to have some kernel of reality, so they were sparse too.   Only about 20 days were below normal for the entire period, probably there was only one  below normal 10 day period.   I had remarked back in Oct/Nov that the 5400 THK line was spending too much time in HB Canada on the long range outputs!

I give this winter a C-.   It was like a marriage that is good at just two points>>>>the wedding and the divorce  LOL

C+...Can't give a better score when all three months are above normal temp wise. ... great Jan blizzard and at least not too mild at +0.6 degrees, Feb with first below 0 here since 1994 but not much else with 6.5" of snow and Temps probably a couple of degrees above normal. Let's not forget Dec with incredible warmth.

C

As people have already said this winter was basically saved by one huge storm although we did get a nice treat with the anafrontal like system.

Otherwise it was well above normal temperature wise with a couple highly anomalous Arctic shots (islands of cold if you will). December was a massive fail and so far February hasn't impressed.

But darn it one HECS of a storm can make a winter and it did (somewhat) even though it all melted rapidly afterwards.

I would give this winter a C-. Other than the 22 inches I got from the blizzard, I've only received 5 additional inches thus far. Too many promising LR outlooks for a cold and snowy sustained pattern only to fall apart as we get in closer. I hate strong El Ninos. Already looking forward to winter 2016/17.
