 MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1386
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   1203 PM CDT SUN JUL 24 2016

   AREAS AFFECTED...PORTIONS OF NRN/ERN OH...WRN PA...THE NRN WV
   PANHANDLE

   CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

   VALID 241703Z - 241930Z

   PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...5 PERCENT

SUMMARY...TSTMS WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE IN NUMBER/INTENSITY
THROUGH THE AFTERNOON ACROSS PARTS OF THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY AND
VICINITY. LOCALLY STRONG TSTMS -- SOME POSSIBLY APPROACHING SVR
LIMITS -- MAY OCCUR...THOUGH WW ISSUANCE IS NOT ANTICIPATED.

DISCUSSION...VISIBLE SATELLITE LOOPS AND SFC OBSERVATIONS INDICATE A
WARM FRONT ADVANCING NEWD ACROSS PARTS OF WRN PA AND NERN OH...WITH
DEWPOINTS INTO THE UPPER 60S/AROUND 70F ON THE WARMER SIDE OF THIS
BOUNDARY. BROAD CUMULUS FIELDS SW OF THE WARM FRONT HIGHLIGHT THE
   MOIST/DESTABILIZING BOUNDARY LAYER.

WITH LITTLE CAPPING...AND GIVEN FORCING FOR ASCENT RELATED TO AN MCV
MOVING EWD ACROSS THE CLEVELAND AREA...A SFC BOUNDARY MOVING SWD
   ACROSS PARTS OF NWRN/N-CNTRL OHIO...DIFFERENTIAL-HEATING-INDUCED
BAROCLINICITY ON THE EDGE OF MULTI-LAYERED CLOUDS ACROSS NRN OHIO --
TSTMS SHOULD CONTINUE INCREASING IN COVERAGE/INTENSITY THIS
AFTERNOON. THIS ACTIVITY WILL SPREAD GENERALLY EWD/ESEWD.

WITH MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR CHARACTERIZED BY MLCAPE AROUND
1500-2000 J/KG CONTINUING TO BUILD NEWD ACROSS THE UPPER OHIO
VALLEY...A FEW VIGOROUS UPDRAFTS MAY EVOLVE. THE CLE VWP SUGGESTS
ONLY AROUND 20 KT OF 0-6-KM BULK SHEAR PRESENT...THOUGH A FEW
MULTICELL CLUSTERS WITH LOCALLY DMGG WIND GUSTS COULD OCCUR.

GENERALLY POOR MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND THE LACK OF STRONGER DEEP
SHEAR SHOULD PREVENT A MORE SUBSTANTIAL SVR RISK FROM EVOLVING.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1389
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0254 PM CDT SUN JUL 24 2016

AREAS AFFECTED...PORTIONS OF OHIO...THE NRN WV PANHANDLE...SWRN PA

   CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

   VALID 241954Z - 242230Z

   PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...20 PERCENT

SUMMARY...ISOLATED DMGG WIND GUSTS WILL BE POSSIBLE WITHIN A NARROW
CORRIDOR CENTERED ON THE SIDNEY OHIO AREA THROUGH COLUMBUS AND
FARTHER E ACROSS ZANESVILLE...WHEELING...TOWARD ALTOONA PA. WW
   ISSUANCE IS UNLIKELY.

DISCUSSION...CONVECTION CONTINUES DEVELOPING ALONG AN OUTFLOW
BOUNDARY EXTENDING FROM W-CNTRL OHIO N OF INTERSTATE 70 TOWARD THE
MARYSVILLE/DELAWARE AREAS. A MORE PROMINENT CLUSTER OF TSTMS IS
MOVING ACROSS WRN PA...WHICH DEVELOPED AHEAD OF AN MCV THAT EARLIER
INTERCEPTED A NEWD-ADVANCING WARM FRONT. OTHER TSTM DEVELOPMENT IS
ONGOING BETWEEN THESE REGIONS...ACROSS PARTS OF E-CNTRL OHIO.

IN WRN PA...REAR-INFLOW CHANNELS ACCOMPANYING THE AFOREMENTIONED
MCV-ENHANCED ACTIVITY ARE LOCALLY SUPPORTING STRONGER WIND GUSTS.
THE CORRESPONDING MESO-BETA-SCALE MCS WILL CONTINUE TRACKING ESEWD
ACROSS WARM/MOIST/MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR. HOWEVER...THE ONLY
MODEST...MCS-RELATED COLD POOL STRENGTH/SIZE IS FORECAST TO KEEP THE
SVR-WIND RISK ISOLATED. THIS ACTIVITY WILL ADVANCE ACROSS PARTS OF
SWRN PA -- WITH FLANKING CONVECTION CROSSING THE NRN WV PANHANDLE --
   THROUGH LATE AFTERNOON.

ASIDE FROM THE WRN-PA/NRN-WV-PANHANDLE ACTIVITY...MOST OF THE
CONVECTION INTO OH WILL REMAIN DISORGANIZED WHILE GRADUALLY
SPREADING SEWD. THIS WILL BE AIDED BY PREFERENTIAL
DEVELOPMENT/PROPAGATION ALONG PERIPHERIES OF AMALGAMATING COLD POOLS
INTO THE STRONG INSTABILITY NEAR THE INTERSTATE-70 CORRIDOR. DEEP
SHEAR IS WEAK ENOUGH TO MITIGATE SUBSTANTIVE CONVECTIVE
ORGANIZATION...THOUGH DCAPE REACHING NEAR 1000 J/KG MAY FAVOR
LOCALLY STRONG WIND GUSTS -- PARTICULARLY WITH CONVECTION SPREADING
   ACROSS PARTS OF CENTRAL OHIO.

   PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...95 PERCENT

SUMMARY...INCREASING TSTM COVERAGE IS ANTICIPATED DURING THE NEXT
FEW HOURS WITH SOME STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS LIKELY. DAMAGING WIND
GUSTS WILL BE THE PRIMARY SVR THREAT AND WW WILL LIKELY BE NEEDED TO

HAVE ALREADY INCREASED INTO THE UPPER 80S AND LOW 90S AMIDST

Looks like it might be another bust down here unless we can manage something later tonight.  Most of the storms staying to our East, North, and South as per the trend this summer.  I feel like there might be some kind of weird weather phenomenon occurring locally that is generally eviscerating storm formation.  Maybe some sort of subsidence?  Conditions have been ripe down here during the day and I don't remember this happening so often in the past.  Very odd.

Pittsburgh folks. Where does one need to live in the metro area for decent snows when & if snow occurs other than Seven Springs or Hidden Valley area. Little to far of a commute.

My wife may be taking a job in the city of Pittsburgh. If she accepts we would move there at some point.

I always read south and east. Any big difference in certain areas. If no, I may just bang out something in the city to make her life east.

The turnpike corridor from about Cranberry to Irwin, seems to do the best in snowfall.

Mabey finding a place just to the NE of the pike, might be the sweet spot between commute and snow amounts.

Yeah, anywhere on the North side of the city is where you'll want to look for snow.  Even in the city proper mixing issues aren't uncommon, so anywhere south of the city is typically worse in that regard.  Most everyone here is well acquainted with the "warm tongue."

I've driven a good bit around Pittsburgh but never for an every-day commute, so on a daily basis, I'm not quite sure which is worse between 376 and 279 in terms of traffic.  I do know traveling on 376 East into the city is almost never easy; two lane tunnel (Fort Pitt) really gets backed up even off-hours.  Though I guess the commute partially depends where the job is located (downtown or elsewhere).

There are some nice suburbs on the West side of the city, though.

we will likely rent for a few months to get a feel for the area if this goes through and the salary is worth a move.

Any input on greensburg. Not really a city person, but have been to downtown Pitt a few times and have enjoyed it.

Not really looking to get to the north side that far such as the Butler area.

I see Cranberry is north.

My wife is used to the traffic, she has a 35-40  mile commute each way now.

she would be working  swing shifts at a hospital etc.

My concern is that If I agree to move into the city, I never get to leave the city. lol.

West side it out of consideration as I would be pissed when one the big east coast storms hits the area and kicks back snow to the pitt area.

i see  condos/townhouses are not very expensive in the Seven Springs/Hidden Valley area. May consider buying a  place out in that area to get my fix if we move into the city. Assume it it nice all year around out in the higher terrain.

we will likely rent for a few months to get a feel for the area if this goes through and the salary is worth a move.

Any input on greensburg. Not really a city person, but have been to downtown Pitt a few times and have enjoyed it.

I worked in Greensburg for about 10 years, and I can say they tend to do well with the bigger storms where areas to the NW may miss out on a tight gradient system and you wouldn't have to go to far east to start getting into the higher elevations and a more rural setting. I'm not sure on what the commute would be like from Greensburg to downtown would be like on a daily basis.

I've noticed that even a small jog north into southern Butler or Armstrong counties makes a big difference when it comes to our usual storms which almost always have some element of a change over to rain or sleet, these areas will stay snow longer and can tend to do slightly better with LES. Your commute into the city from here might take you down route 28, which I take now for my new job and at 5:30am traffic isn't bad, but later in the morning it can be real bear.

Yeah, this is the longest stretch with these above average temperatures and high humidity we have had in awhile. Every morning even at 5am when I open the door it just hits you. Starting to look forward to some cool crisp fall days.

JAMSTEC is on board lol I don't follow to closely stuff for the upcoming winter until end of September, but early analysis seems to indicate winter could start off cold then its up in the air depending on how blocking sets up for the second half. Either way I'd take a "Snow Filled" winter and run!

 SPC AC 161256

   DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0756 AM CDT TUE AUG 16 2016

   VALID 161300Z - 171200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE NORTHEAST STATES...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE UPPER MIDWEST...

...THERE IS A MRGL RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE OH/TN VALLEYS TO NEW
   ENGLAND...

...THERE IS A MRGL RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE MIDDLE MO
   VALLEY/UPPER MIDWEST...

   ...SUMMARY...
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS PARTS OF THE UPPER OHIO
   VALLEY...MID-ATLANTIC REGION...AND SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND...WHERE
DAMAGING WINDS AND A COUPLE TORNADOES WILL BE POSSIBLE. OTHER STRONG
THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS INTO
THE MID-MISSISSIPPI VALLEY...AND ACROSS THE UPPER MIDWEST.

   ...NORTHEAST STATES...
A SHORTWAVE TROUGH AND RELATED MID/UPPER-LEVEL SPEED MAX CURRENTLY
OVER THE GREAT LAKES WILL STEADILY PROGRESS EASTWARD-NORTHEASTWARD
TOWARD SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF ONTARIO/QUEBEC AND NY/NORTHERN NEW
ENGLAND THROUGH TONIGHT. A WARM FRONT WILL SPREAD
NORTH-NORTHEASTWARD ACROSS NY AND SOUTHERN/WESTERN NEW ENGLAND
THROUGH THIS EVENING...WITH A VERY MOIST AIR MASS /PRECIPITABLE
WATER VALUES NEAR 2 INCHES/ WITHIN THE SECTOR AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT
THAT IS CURRENTLY LOCATED ACROSS THE MIDWEST/OH VALLEY.

AS AT LEAST WEAK HEIGHT FALLS BEGIN TO INFLUENCE THE UPPER OH
   VALLEY/NORTHEAST STATES...A SHARPENING PRE-FRONTAL
   TROUGH...INCREASINGLY MOIST/CONFLUENT LOW-LEVEL FLOW...AND
DIFFERENTIAL HEATING IN VICINITY OF HIGHER TERRAIN SHOULD ALL
CONTRIBUTE TO INCREASING THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT INITIALLY ACROSS
PARTS OF NY/PA THIS AFTERNOON...WITH STORMS FURTHER
INCREASING/SPREADING EASTWARD INTO NEW ENGLAND THIS EVENING. IN THE
PRESENCE OF MODERATE BUOYANCY...RELATIVELY STRONG VERTICAL SHEAR
/GENERALLY 35-45 KT EFFECTIVE/ ACROSS NY AND NORTHERN PA INTO
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND WILL SUPPORT BOTH SUPERCELLS AND WELL-ORGANIZED
LINE SEGMENTS. THIS INCLUDES THE POTENTIAL FOR A COUPLE OF TORNADOES
ACROSS EAST-CENTRAL NY/HUDSON VALLEY AND POSSIBLY ADJACENT NEW
ENGLAND/PA/NJ...ASIDE FROM A MORE REGIONALLY PREVALENT RISK OF
DAMAGING WINDS AND POSSIBLY SOME HAIL /PRIMARILY ASSOCIATED WITH ANY
   SUPERCELLS/.

   ...OH VALLEY TO CENTRAL APPALACHIANS...
WHERE ADEQUATE DESTABILIZATION OCCURS TO THE EAST/SOUTHEAST OF A
COLD FRONT AND PERSISTENT CONVEYOR-RELATED PRECIPITATION...A FEW
STRONG STORMS CAPABLE OF LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS MAY OCCUR THIS
   AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING.

   ...UPPER MIDWEST/MIDDLE MO VALLEY...
COINCIDENT WITH MODESTLY STRONG CYCLONIC UPPER-LEVEL FLOW...MULTIPLE
WEAK/CONVECTIVELY RELATED DISTURBANCES WILL GENERALLY SPREAD
SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS THE REGION THROUGH THIS EVENING. CURRENT
THINKING IS THAT THE MOST ORGANIZED/SEMI-FOCUSED SEVERE THUNDERSTORM
POTENTIAL SHOULD EXIST LATER TODAY NEAR A WEAK
NORTHEAST/SOUTHWEST-ORIENTED SURFACE BOUNDARY IN THE PRESENCE OF
MODERATE TO STRONG BUOYANCY AND AS MUCH AS 30-35 KT OF EFFECTIVE
SHEAR. ACCORDINGLY...STORMS SHOULD INITIALLY DEVELOP ACROSS SOUTHERN
MN INTO NORTHERN IA LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING...WITH AT LEAST
ISOLATED INSTANCES OF SEVERE HAIL/WIND POSSIBLE AS STORMS SPREAD
   GENERALLY SOUTHEASTWARD.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1542
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0157 PM CDT TUE AUG 16 2016

   AREAS AFFECTED...CNTRL/ERN OH...WRN PA...NRN WV PANHANDLE

   CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

   VALID 161857Z - 162100Z

   PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...40 PERCENT

SUMMARY...A GRADUAL INCREASE IN THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM THREAT IS
EXPECTED THROUGH THE AFTERNOON...WITH A PRIMARY THREAT OF DAMAGING
WIND AND PERHAPS A TORNADO OR TWO.

DISCUSSION...AT 1845Z...CONVECTION IS INCREASING ACROSS PORTIONS OF
CENTRAL/EASTERN OH...AS A MIDLEVEL VORT MAX AND ASSOCIATED SURFACE
LOW MOVE NEWD ACROSS SRN ONTARIO. POOR MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES AND WEAK
BUOYANCY HAVE LIMITED THE INTENSITY OF CONVECTION THUS FAR...BUT
CONTINUED WARMING OF A VERY MOIST AIRMASS WILL ALLOW FOR SOME
GRADUAL INTENSIFICATION THIS AFTERNOON AS STORMS MOVE EASTWARD INTO
ERN OH/WRN PA. MODERATE SWLY MIDLEVEL FLOW IS SUPPORTING SUFFICIENT
DEEP-LAYER SHEAR FOR SOME STORM ORGANIZATION AND A FEW WEAKLY
ROTATING CELLS AND/OR SMALL BOWING SEGMENTS MAY EVOLVE OUT OF
ONGOING CONVECTION. RELATIVELY STRONG SWLY LOW-LEVEL FLOW WILL
SUPPORT A THREAT OF DAMAGING WIND WITH THE STRONGEST STORMS. A BRIEF
TORNADO ALSO CANNOT BE RULED OUT WITH ANY SUPERCELL THAT
   EVOLVES...GIVEN RICH BOUNDARY-LAYER MOISTURE AND MODERATE LOW-LEVEL
SHEAR...THOUGH VEERING LOW-LEVEL FLOW WITH TIME WILL TEND TO LIMIT
   THIS THREAT TO SOME EXTENT.

IT IS UNCLEAR AT THIS TIME IF CONVECTION WILL BECOME SUFFICIENTLY
ORGANIZED TO NECESSITATE WATCH ISSUANCE...BUT A WATCH WILL BE
CONSIDERED IF MULTIPLE ORGANIZED STRUCTURES EVOLVE OVER THE NEXT 2-3
   HOURS.
