We do have a storm moving into northern Allegheny County as meatwad posted, but overall this isn't looking very impressive. The NWS talked earlier about how they sent one of their weather balloons up and found a lot of dry air keeping more storms from firing. With a front moving through, I'm sure some will still fire, mainly north of Pittsburgh, but not a whole lot. A lot of heat and sunshine today, which helps, but the drier air is hurting things.

We'll see how this pans out for Saturday.

...DISCUSSION...

MODELS CONTINUE TO SHOW SEVERE THUNDERSTORM POTENTIAL ON SATURDAY

FROM OHIO AND POSSIBLY SERN LOWER MI ACROSS PA AND PERHAPS EXTENDING

EWD INTO SURROUNDING STATES. ECMWF SHOWS STORMS FROM LAKE ERIE INTO

CENTRAL AND ERN PA DURING THE DAY...CONTINUING ACROSS NJ SAT

EVENING...WHILE THE GFS IS FARTHER W FROM WRN PA INTO OH. GIVEN

AMPLE NW FLOW ALOFT...AND THE ADVECTION OF MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY

FROM THE W...A CORRIDOR OF SEVERE APPEARS LIKELY ALTHOUGH PRECISE

PLACEMENT OF THE GREATEST RISK WILL BECOME MORE APPARENT IN LATER

OUTLOOKS. VEERING WINDS WITH HEIGHT SUGGEST BOTH SUPERCELLS AND BOWS

WILL BE POSSIBLE.

Just like Winter. 8 days out we are getting excited for something and 8 days later we get nothing.

We've had a real aversion to any kind of severe weather thus far. We've barely had any real lightning even. Seems that most of the storms that do approach end up weakening.

Yesterday I was lucky to get the remnants from those storms from Ohio. ( just wind ).

All year we've been missing some ingredient, whether it's been location, dynamics, dry air etc.

The severe risk has been expanded across the entire area, with a

"enhanced" risk generally along and south of the PA turnpike.

Limitations included a weakening wind field and relatively warm

mid levels, but these are expected to be offset as lift improves

with the low advancing toward a very moist, and diurnally-

destabilizing airmass. Frontal boundaries congealing into the

surface low are a problem as per enhanced convergence and low

level shear. Dry mid level air is also progged to advect into the

advancing low, enhancing downdraft CAPE and thus wind gust and

cold pool potential with MCS possibility along the trailing cold

front. The bottom line is that the area is being monitored for

locally heavy rainfall and the full array of severe weather.

GIVEN 35 TO 55 KT FLOW IN THE 850 TO 500 MB LAYER...EXPECT FAST STORM MOTIONS AND LIKELIHOOD FOR FAIRLY WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WINDS. LARGE HAIL WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE...ALONG WITH A TORNADO OR TWO. AREAS AFFECTED...CNTRL/ERN OH...SWRN/SRN PA...NRN WV...MD...NRN VA

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 161708Z - 161845Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...95 PERCENT

SUMMARY...THREAT FOR WIDESPREAD STRONG TO DMGG WINDS AND ISOLATED
LARGE HAIL WILL INCREASE OVER THE NEXT 1-2 HRS FROM ERN OH SEWD
ACROSS SWRN PA AND NRN WV. THESE THREATS WILL EVENTUALLY EXTEND EWD
ACROSS NRN VA AND MD LATER THIS AFTERNOON. A WATCH WILL LIKELY BE
ISSUED BY 18-19Z.

DISCUSSION...ISOLATED TSTMS HAVE DEVELOPED NEAR/SE OF CLEVELAND OVER
THE PAST 1-2 HRS...ALONG WHAT APPEARS TO BE A PRE-FRONTAL WIND SHIFT
EXTENDING SWWD INTO W-CNTRL OH. PRIMARY SFC LOW IS CENTERED OVER WRN
LAKE ERIE...WITH COLD FRONT ENTERING NWRN OH AS OF 16Z. STRONG SFC
HEATING IS OCCURRING ACROSS CNTRL AND ERN OH AHEAD OF THE DEVELOPING
CONVECTION...AND UPPER 60S TO LOWER 70S F DEWPOINTS ARE CONTRIBUTING
TO MLCAPE VALUES LIKELY APPROACHING 2000 J/KG. CONVECTIVE COVERAGE
SHOULD CONTINUE INCREASING THROUGHOUT THE EARLY AFTERNOON ACROSS
CNTRL/ERN OH...WITH A QUICK EVOLUTION INTO CLUSTERS/LINE SEGMENTS
PRIOR TO UPSCALE GROWTH INTO A LIKELY MCS.

CONVECTION PERSISTING ACROSS WRN PA AND NERN WV HAS RESULTED IN
EFFECTIVE BAROCLINIC ZONE FROM E-CNTRL OH INTO NRN WV...BUT
CLEARING/SUBSIDENCE IN THE WAKE OF ONGOING CONVECTION SHOULD ALLOW
FOR AT LEAST PARTIAL AIR MASS RECOVERY. PRIMARY THREAT IS LIKELY TO
BE DMGG WIND GUSTS WITH EVOLVING CONVECTIVE SYSTEM...BUT ISOLATED
LARGE HAIL IS ALSO POSSIBLE. MODERATELY STRONG WLY LOW-MIDLEVEL FLOW
WAS OBSERVED IN PBZ/CLE VWP DATA...AND VEERING WITHIN THE LOWEST 1
KM AGL MAY SUPPORT THE POTENTIAL FOR A TORNADO OR TWO...PARTICULARLY
WHILE CONVECTION REMAINS MORE DISCRETE. TRENDS ARE BEING CLOSELY
MONITORED FOR ISSUANCE OF A WW...LIKELY BY 18-19Z.

That mini-line of storms we got earlier wasn't much but some moderate rain.  The severe-warned cell moved just to our west, evidently there was quarter-sized hail in that one, but we didn't get much in the immediate locale.  We'll see how this afternoon sets up.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0951
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0320 PM CDT THU JUN 16 2016

AREAS AFFECTED...MUCH OF WV...SRN PA...MD...NRN VA

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 261...

VALID 162020Z - 162115Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 261
CONTINUES.

SUMMARY...A THREAT FOR WIDESPREAD STRONG TO DMGG WIND GUSTS AND
ISOLATED LARGE HAIL CONTINUES TO GRADUALLY INCREASE ACROSS WRN
PORTIONS OF WW 261. A LOCALIZED SHORT-TERM TORNADO THREAT MAY ALSO
ACCOMPANY A PAIR OF DISCRETE STORMS ACROSS FAR ERN WV AND NRN VA.

DISCUSSION...LATEST RADAR TRENDS CONTINUE TO SHOW AN INCREASE IN
CONVECTION CROSSING THE UPPER OH VALLEY...WITH SEVERAL MERGERS
RESULTING IN A GRADUALLY ORGANIZING CONVECTIVE LINE APPROACHING THE
APPALACHIANS OF WV AND SRN PA. MOST FAVORABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR
SUSTAINING STRONG TO SVR CONVECTION REMAINS ALONG/S OF OUTFLOW
BOUNDARY AND EFFECTIVE STATIONARY FRONT ACROSS SWRN PA INTO NRN
MD/VA...WHERE STRONG HEATING AMIDST RELATIVELY RICH BOUNDARY-LAYER
MOISTURE IS YIELDING MLCAPE VALUES GENERALLY BETWEEN 1000-1500 J/KG.
STRONG TO DMGG WIND AND ISOLATED LARGE HAIL THREAT WILL CONTINUE TO
SPREAD EWD THIS AFTERNOON INTO THE EARLY EVENING.

ALSO OF NOTE...A COUPLE OF DISCRETE TSTMS OVER FAR ERN WV MOVING
TOWARDS NRN VA APPEAR TO BE ANCHORED ALONG/NEAR THE AFOREMENTIONED
OUTFLOW BOUNDARY/FRONT. LOW-LEVEL SHEAR IS GENERALLY WEAK ACROSS THE
REGION...BUT ENHANCED LOW-LEVEL VORTICITY IN THE VICINITY OF THE
OUTFLOW BOUNDARY COULD PROVIDE AN INCREASED SHORT-TERM LARGE HAIL
AND POSSIBLE TORNADO THREAT.
