FallsLake
At 3pm RDU is 30 degrees and still receiving freezing rain. As of 2:51 they have received .33 qpf listed as freezing rain. That's an ice storm. All you need .25 of freezing rain to meet winter storm criteria. We should have an hour or two more of freezing temps. Rocky Mount is still at 31 and Sanford is 29. FallsLake
Sounds like we stayed below freezing longer than forecasted. We at least had more precip than anticipated. That SW feed into the Triangle all day really did the job.
sparklecity
Seems like we have been topped out a while at 28° now. Still have the freezing mist/fog and some frozen droplets. It looks like snow, but isn't. It's structure is needle like. It must be the tiny droplets freezing on the way down, and they are light they float around like snow. FallsLake
Thank goodness there's no wind. I would have tree branches coming down and probably no power.

Could be that the above 0 deg layer is thin and the snowflakes are only partially melting, then refreezing down below the warm layer

tarheelwx
I think this snow drizzle everyone is seeing must be forming in the very lowest levels of the atmosphere. TW
lookingnorth
Only about 1/20 to 1/10" of ice on the trees here. I think the precipitation has been more focused to my east.
NWNC2015
I don't understand how, with 850s above 0, but it is snowing lightly here now. That probably means more sleet/snow accumulations in the heavier returns for the northern foothills are on the way. It's micro climate thing where a small window of snow growth is possible just east of the mountains.
SnowDeac
Charlotte is about to get hit with some heavier returns. Very slight glaze with temps creeping near the freezing mark. I'm at 32/26, so it will be interesting to see what happens...

Iceagewhereartthou
29/28 in Easley. Have yet to see the first flake, pellet, or droplet come down from the sky for the entire event. Went to bed last night with 26/5. Total wetbulb and evap cooling fail for this one. I have found that evap cooling only works if there is a big initial burst of precip, otherwise it does absolutely nothing to help you. Precip still hours away - looks like I won't see a single droplet of frozen precip from this - total failure of a system for MBY anyway. Congrats to those further north in NC/VA/TN and up who got to see some. Maybe next winter will deliver more goods for the upstate (we say that every year)! NWNC2015
Very heavy freezing rain in Elkin now. Maybe thunder and above freezing rain over the snow-pack for some overnight. This is a setup where there will be puddles of water in your yard on top of the layer of ice protecting your snow. Saw it once sometime between the year 2000 and 2005.
