Pam- good to see you again. If you put your exact total in the "comments" section, they will use that. They read the comment section.

Nice to see you as well and thank you. Someone posted a link to the old page in the banter thread when we had that minor snowfall on Sunday 17 January and I did favorite it because I found it preferable and overall an easier page to navigate and for reporting purposes.

2.5" seems low for the park I had 3.5" at Columbia/Barnard

It's a 1:00pm measurement, as is LGA. By 1pm, I was down to 2.8" in Whitestone and right now, I'm down to 2.2". Compaction and melting occurring fast.

Largest measurements would be at about 11:00am. But I think the rules don't allow measurements that often.

Measured a healthy 7.9" of packed paste in Lindenhurst. Roads are already clear, but I'm sure this compact, wet snow will be slow to melt. Also, looking to pile some more on top of it in the coming days!

Speaking of piles this is the kind of snow that makes huge snow piles. I had before this storm still about 3' of snow in my main pile at home. It's going to be huge when I add to it the 10" from today later

As of 10:15 am, we have 4.0" in Metuchen at 31F and it's snowing lightly, with the back edge at our doorstep (right along the Turnpike, which I live W of by about 1 mile), so I think that'll be the final measurement.  Very nice storm and great forecast by the NWS (I was in their 3-4" swath on the graphic, although the WWA said 1-3", which I never quite understood), DT, and many others.  Definitely less to the N/W and more to the S/E, as predicted.  And I just made a snowman, which is always fun.

Now at 27" for the season, which is right around climo for the whole season, which is pretty amazing given that this will end up being one of our warmest winters on record (DJF), if not the warmest.  On to Monday/Tuesday.

Agreed.  I got 3.75" here (I'm like 5 minutes from Metuchen).

This snow barely blew around. So the roof lawn issue doesn't apply.

Islip will be around 10. I measured 9.5 and you 9. People to his west 10-11.

I think the numbers make sense for this storm.

In the blizzard I agree, the roof is an issue. But not with heavy wet snow. All the snow is on the roof. If anything you undermeasure in wet snow because it gets stuck in the trees and compacts.

I disagreed with you calling his 8" measurement BS.  I've been down this road many times. Believe me, I'd rather measure higher amounts, but when they're not there, they are not there.  I've seen this in my own neighborhood being told we had two feet when I couldn't even find a 20" drift.

Looks like ISP metar reporting 10" on the ground as of 18z.

KISP 051756Z 35022G33KT 3/4SM R06/2800V4000FT -SN BR BKN009 OVC015 00/M01 A2998 RMK AO2 PK WND 35033/1755 SLP152 SNINCR 1/10 931080 4/010 933008 P0002 60040 T00001011 10006 20000 56021 $

How do you interpret METAR remarks with respect to snow? I am confused by these parts: SNINCR (snow increasing?) 1/10 9310180 4//010 933008

I measure far away from trees or the house.

The 1/10 is 1" past hour and 10" depth.

Airports report these special metars when the snow rates are 1"+ an hour.

Non airports like KNYC do not, which is why we need to wait for those totals. It's probably a FAA requirement I'm thinking?

Yup, reading from the bottom up...2" increase to 8" from 1456-1556, followed by 1" increase to 9" from 1556-1656 followed by 1" increase to 10" from 1656-1756.

And I believe the #s are rounded up and down?

So when it says 1/10 it could be .6"-1.4" last hour with 9.5" to 10.4" on the ground.
