NorthShoreWx
I Don't buy that. I really think most suburban yards are not good places to measure snow. Too high a roof to lawn ratio. 8 is too low. And being "conservative" means your numbers are wrong. Islip reported 8" hours ago and I measured 9.5 to your north. Again, being conservative doesn't make sense..be accurate.

I am accurate... you can measure 5 different places and get 5 different measurements... dollars to doughnuts when NWS comes out with their numbers many places will have public spotters saying 12" when trained spotters are measuring 9" or so... see it all the time. LongBeachSurfFreak
Here is the band that just sat over my area. STALLEDOVERUS.gif Here are my pictures of measurements. IMG_8338.JPG IMG_8339.JPG IMG_8340.JPG IMG_8341.JPG Hmmm based on the radar loop looks like we missed that band stalling by a tad a few miles to your east. Chinook
Wow! Snow rates must have gone crazy with perhaps better moisture and better dynamics. As of yesterday morning, the NWS and the models didn't really have much over 5" for anybody on the East Coast. (Correct me if I am wrong) Now, I am seeing 9-12" local storm reports from JFK airport to Putnam, Connecticut. That's kind of a major storm. 5" as far west as Jamesburg, NJ. Parsley
excellent... btw, I am usually conservative in my measurement... I think my blower has a 10" vertical, was almost to the top... maybe a I measured wrong... Just does not seem to be more than 8" or so here... not that I am complaining... two days ago I thought if I got 4"+ I would be happy. My sister in East Islip measured 11" around 12:30pm. This street accumulation alone is insane!
psv88
I Don't buy that. I really think most suburban yards are not good places to measure snow. Too high a roof to lawn ratio. This snow barely blew around. So the roof lawn issue doesn't apply. Islip will be around 10. I measured 9.5 and you 9. People to his west 10-11. I think the numbers make sense for this storm. In the blizzard I agree, the roof is an issue. But not with heavy wet snow. All the snow is on the roof. If anything you undermeasure in wet snow because it gets stuck in the trees and compacts. FreeRain
some of these measurements make me laugh... a real measurement of just under 8" in SW Suffolk - West Islip... I say they make me laugh as I work in western Nassau near Syosset and there is not even close to a foot... I've been giving my observations on these boards since around 2005. The one time I have the highest measurement and I get your post. As I said I have 11.5". How do I post the photos here?

Guest Pamela
I suppose I'll put about 11.0 in the journal for this one; one thing I do need to do is reestablish the link to the old Upton storm reports system...the new one on the NOAA OKX page leads to one where you may only roughly report the storm total (they give you a series of choices from a drop down menu and they are rather inexact i.e. "18-20 inches")...making a precise report to them problematic. Guest Pamela
Islip seemed to report a bit low over the years; now they seem to tend to report a little high..the WSO out at Upton seemed to report a bit high during the first decade of the century...now there are occasions when they seem a fraction low...it evens out over time, I suppose...as most climatological averages tend to...
