-17F last night, one degree shy of my 23 year record of living here.  Looking forward to the "big" event starting late tomorrow.  About 5" is the biggest snowfall  (much was sleet) of the season.  Maybe I can score several inches and then it will probably warm up to the mid or upper 30's during the main show with my usual cold air damning.  Should end up with a net positive.

Any of you guys deer experts?   Last night must have been brutal for my herd.  No deep snow for insulation from the wind and cold.  Wonder how cold they can take it before hypothermia sets in.   -17F with that roaring wind is obviously much harder to take than a calm radiational cooling night.  Have seen them today.

PF,  How bad of a hit is it for the ski resorts.  Yesterday and today brutal cold and then loose another day on Tuesday.  The small areas must be really hurting.  My local area  (Ragged Mountain) keeps their sites so vague that the average flat-lander really doesn't get any weather information and limited trail info.

Our staff biologist once said that a northern deer in winter cold can maintain core temp without being active (e.g. lying down) if the air temp is above -30F.  Of course, that's without much if any wind, and also for a healthy and well fed deer, not one that's starving or walking around looking for something to eat.

Don't think we reached 5 here today, shooting for -20 tonight as winds drop (we hope.)

PF,  thanks for the input.  Even though people are mentally done with this winter the bills  still have to be paid.  So bad is bad but every ski day that is lost hurts the bottom line more and more.  It's only mid February so we can't compare this season to other crappy years but how bad is this year compared to other lousy seasons to date?  You guys get the upslope but places like Loon and Waterville Valley in NH get little.  Of course they have snowmaking but that must cost a fortune.  The snowmobile industry must be hurting the worst.  We have a local dealer up the road. The the same machines he had out in front of the store in October still sit there.  He is sitting on a ton of inventory and it must really be killing him.  Not one ridable day this year as we have never had more than 5 or 6" on the ground at any one time.

There are Winter Weather Advisories up throughout the area for snow and mixed precipitation with this upcoming storm, and Winter Storm Watches up in western New York State where more snow/ice may be an issue.  This looks like one of those sandwich storms, with 2-4” of dense snow tonight on the front end and potentially some more snow on the back tomorrow night.  The models vary somewhat with respect to the backside snow, but the BTV NWS forecast discussion suggest that moisture will be drying up pretty quickly, so no big accumulations are expected tomorrow night.  Maps and advisory text below:

I don't like front enders and I suspect in the valley we will end up with bare ground by tomorrow night. I don't usually put much stock in the back end snow showers as the cold is usually chasing what moisture is left. Perhaps the mountains will see a little of that though. This isn't the system we were looking for but it is the one we got LOL. If we get a little ice accrual that could be interesting.

PF wanted to thank you for all your suggestions for my trip to Stowe last week. Certainly gave Pinnacle ~1k of business from my family lol. Great shop and guys/gals. Also, loved the two alchemist beers I tried. Quickly exhausting my Heady Topper supply though :(

14.2/9F  very light snow.  My point and click has 46F for tomorrow.  I would bet $10,000 that will not happen.  I think lots of ice is in store!  Freezing rain all the way down the coast to Richmond VA right now.  I think this is going to bust way cold at the surface, at least in the NH valleys.  Will be interesting to see how much we warm tomorrow after our snow tonight.

Biggest detractor to significant ice I think will be QPF. We may just get a burst of precip and then dry slot early tomorrow, and by the time the rest of the precip arrives you get mid to upper 30s rain.

Event totals: 2.9” Snow/0.57” L.E.

My wife was up around 5:30 A.M. or so and said that the sleet has only started up a few minutes or so before I made my 6:00 A.M. observations, at least based on what she was hearing on the windows.  Indeed there was a fairly thin layer of sleet out there on top of the new snow when I checked it.  That overnight accumulation really bolstered the snowpack; the 0.57” of liquid in this core is actually the most I’ve measured in a single core this season, just beating out a core of 0.56” back on December 29th from 4.3” of snow.

Also of note is that this storm just pushed the season’s total snowfall past the 50” mark at our site.  That’s typically the first snowfall benchmark I look for each season, although if things are on track it comes in December.

Details from the 6:00 A.M. Waterbury observations:

New Snow: 2.9 inches

New Liquid: 0.57 inches

Snow/Water Ratio: 5.1

Snow Density: 19.7% H2O

Temperature: 26.2 F

Sky: Sleet

Snow at the stake: 5.0 inches

I’ve got the lasted advisories, projected accumulations maps, and Winter Weather Advisory text from the BTV NWS; basically the Winter Storm Watches from yesterday were converted to Winter Storm Warnings off toward the Saint Lawrence Valley.

In terms of accumulations, the projected snowfall map looks pretty good for this area – we’re in the 3-4” shading and we’ve already hit the 3” mark.  It looks like that might be just about it for now however with the back edge of this part of the storm approaching from the south:

It’s hard to complain about that initial outlay of frozen precipitation though, more than a half inch of liquid equivalent will have been put down into the pack before the lull that appears to be to the south.

3" here with a decent crust on top. This is actually more than I expected from this gut punch of a system. Nothing falling at the moment and from the radar JSpin posted above, it looks like it will be a bit before anything else's falls. Hopefully, the crust protects what we got a little bit. Unlike eyewall, I don't want to go back to stick season completely.

Hahah it is not a matter of want but what is inevitable. In the CPV the furnace and rain are pretty effective when we get on the warm side of a storm.

Kiddos are on February break this week. Poor buggers can't catch a break.   First, two-weeks at Christmas with no snow on the ground, now this.  De-frickin-lightful.
