Jim Marusak
if the storm reports that just came in are close in Columbia County, 1" near Benton, and 14" in Catawissa (just south of Bloomsburg). 21" just reported in Ashland near the Columbia/Schuykill county line. distance between Catawissa and Benton as the crows fly, ~19 miles. Ashland same way, about 30 miles. we knew it was going to be a nasty gradient, but this is just nuts.

djr5001
Please clarify how the official measurements get recorded for snow ? I thought it was the hourly totals added up, so compaction & drifting should not be a big factor ? MDT needs to get this right! I don't know and am always confused how they do their official measurements but what gets reported as snowfall is supposed to be the highest amount measured on your snow board/etc in the 24 hour period. It just seems like what gets measured as current depth gets reported as total snowfall for storm. So if they have 12" one hour and say 2" fell in the next hour, I don't understand how they can report a depth of 13" instead of 14". Sure over the course of the event there is settling and compacting but not as quick as their reports indicate with the dry/fluffy snow that fell quickly this morning. CarlislePaWx
At 2:00pm I had picked up an additional 0.7" in the past hour as the accumulation intensity has collapsed in rather dramatic fashion. This is the first hour with less than 2" in an hour since I got up back at 7:30. Storm total now is 31.7". HRRR earlier seemed to keep good accumulations going through until 7:00pm, but at the moment, the radar is rapidly looking weaker and weaker. I only need 4.3" to reach 36. Drifts around my home are pretty amazing. I have a five foot drift at my front door at the moment. No plows have come through our subdivision since 2:00am...so there's over 2 feet on the street which basically is stranding everyone from even getting out of their driveways. Hopefully no medical emergencies. Peak gust so far has been 26mph. Temp up to 24.2 degrees with just light snow falling at the moment. Does anyone have the link to send spotter report to CTP? Voyager
18.75" here in Tamaqua. "Death band" to the south of me in the Lehigh Valley, but it's pushing south now instead of the earlier northwest movements the bands had. I've also noticed that the northern edge of the precip shield seems to moving toward the southeast now as well, so I wonder if things are going to be winding down slowly here over the next few hours. MAG5035
MAG Curious as to how much you have in Bellwood? Make it to 12"? 10.7" was the best I could do. The gradient is insane, Altoona and Hollidaysburg (8-10 miles south of here) have 19.2" and 21" reports respectively. Pretty interesting watching the radar last night, as I was under nearly the same kind of echoes a lot of the time but it never seemed like the rates matched the radar overhead.. but apparently it did just south of here. Also been under echoes the last several hours and it had only snowed for about half an hour of that time.

Voyager
Mag, what do you make of the current radar presentation? I know the storm has to move out at some point, but what I've noticed is that moisture is still moving east to west in from the ocean over New Jersey, but out this way, the northwestern edge seems to be slowly collapsing southeast. Is it dry air pushing in, or does the storm still pivot and build back to the northwest? Our heavy snow has lightened up somewhat, and the "death band" I alluded to over Allentown is slowly creeping southeast.
