Jim Cantore just tweeted about those returns saying there are gravity waves with multiple striations visible on radar with those yellow/red echoes.

 

You can see them propogating NNW through central NJ.

 

The radar is amazing to watch.

Those gravity waves are unreal. The band near DC had them for awhile too. It looks like the radar is filling in southwest of DC, so they may in fact be saved from the dry slot.

It hasn't slowed down. Bayonne is south of my location and it passed me 15-30 mins ago. Pouring snow.. 30-35 dbz working there way into middlesex.

In Yonkers,  that first nice band is about 20 minutes away, looks like its pulsing up too  Otherwise snow picked up to moderate in the last 10 min or so

it's white out conditions 20 mins south of you.i'm in the norwood section of the bx and it's just crazy right now!!. rest assured it's coming.

It's fighting a lot of dry air on the northern flank. This shows up well on the HRRR. But it's making progress. The dry air looks even worse across interior CT.

This is some of the most intense snowfall I have ever seen. Mind you I've been in the Boxing Day Blizzard and Feb 2006

 

I have frequent blizzard conditions and vis under 400 ft

Some fog out there now, too, but visibility has to be around 1/16 mi here in Red Bank. Can't even begin to guess the amount with all the wind, but definitely no less than 5" or 6".

Heaviest banding should be north of TEB and there should be another band near the Md/PA boarder.
