Sure if they are going to add up the depth increases and call that their snowfall. I figured they were just going to record the final depth.

I'll say for the most part the FAA observers do things the right way. It'll interesting to see what they report for 6 hourly totals in about 30 minutes.

547 PM EST SAT JAN 23 2016EXTENSIVE BANDS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW CONTINUE OVER MOST OFSOUTHEAST NEW YORK...NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY AND SOUTHERNCONNECTICUT. AT 537 PM THE HEAVIEST BANDS EXTENDED FROM SOUTHWESTTO NORTHEAST...FROM NEW YORK CITY TO THE NORTH SHORE OF WESTERNLONG ISLAND...THEN UP INTO SOUTHEAST CONNECTICUT EAST OF NEWHAVEN. THESE BANDS ARE SLOWLY WEAKENING BUT REMAINING NEARLYSTATIONARY. SNOWFALL RATES WITH THESE MORE INTENSE BANDS MAYREACH 2 TO 3 INCHES PER HOUR...WITH AN ADDITIONAL 4 TO 6 INCHESOF ACCUMULATION THROUGH 8 PM. OUTSIDE OF THESE BANDS...EXPECTLESSER SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR...AND ANADDITIONAL 2 TO 4 INCHES OF ACCUMULATION THROUGH 8 PM.

Really sucks for those folks in NYC area outside of the bands...they are only seeing lesser snowfall rates of 1-2" per hour, as opposed to 3-4" per hour.  Bummer.  ;)

How much compaction do you think there is with that level of snowfall?

6:00 Update

Mod Snow

25 degrees

38 inches total accum

4 inches in last 3 hours

My neighborhood has transformed into something I have never seen before. It looks like a science station in Antarctica or something. There is the occasional neighbor out trying to shovel or use a snow blower. But overall, people just seem to be accepting the fact that they are not going anywhere for days. Cars are worthless. Just hunks of metal sitting in a stationary place for an indeterminate amount of time. The front of my house reminds me of the picture posted by a NY administrator in the banter thread the other day. The picture depicted a frozen wasteland and he was joking about us.

This storm has reached new levels of incredible to me. The shear power of mother nature is both humbling and awe inspiring. I have a ton of work to do tomorrow starting to dig out and get my life back to some semblance of normalcy. In the mean time, tonight, I will just sit by the fireplace and tip my glass of scotch to the Great Blizzard of 2016. She has certainly earned her name.

Speechless in Wilmington.

Sweet! How long are these bands supposed to last?

Only downhill from here. Southern portions of Boston up to where I am lucked out. OES just dumped overhead. Rivaled rates of last winter. Coastal front is going to sag SE. Soon the 700mb low will be heading east too. Dry air will win by midnight. Next few hours are going to be wonderful though BOS on south.

Can be pretty significant when you have that much snow every 6 hours and it's nice dendrites with wind. But we're also not talking LES fluff.

Just curious because I only took an "on the driveway" measurement in 2013 after it stopped snowing.

Good they just clarified that those are snow depths from the SNINCR remarks, not official measurements. But of course, if you reports them in NWSChat they pretty much become official.

The 931sss codes are all official 6hr new snow, correct?

Thanks! It's better than I thought it would be. Enjoy.

Just measured about 2.5" here

http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/weather/stories/Ranking-The-Top-5-Northeast-Snowstorms-366062481.html

"Given that this storm is likely to spare big cities from New York City to Hartford and Boston, the population and area components of the formula will limit this storm's rating. Washington appears to be the biggest city in the bull's-eye of snow."

Hmm. That was written two days ago.

Our new guidelines are to do just that, as that's really the true impact of snow anyway to the general public. DOT might care about 6 or more hourly measurements.
