87storms
You can get huge dendrites, ie powder, with very cold temps. Its all about UVV, and temps in the snow growth region. yea i just mean like small flakes, but a lot of them lol. i don't mind bigger flakes mixed in. overall, i prefer powdery snow though and so far this is that. CoastalWx
This first stuff is classic leading edge mid level WAA/fronto stuff as shown in SPC mesoanalysis. However look SW. This is where our good theta-e injection is happening with good LLJ and WAA near 850. This area will get entrained into the mid level circulations and aid in heavy snow later tonight and tomorrow as the 800-600 back bent WF develops. With the dryslot moving in, as you can see by - LIs moving into the bay, there may be some TSSN in spots tomorrow..especially if the mid levels really go to town. ALl in all, I expect quite the wake up tomorrow in the DC=BWI area.

MegaMike
Rates have come way down in Ashburn. Real grainy snow. We are not getting enough lift in the dendritic growth zone. A bit of a concern. Locked at about 3.5 inches. Agreed! The growth region is fairly large so it must be insufficient lift. Hopefully that will change as the night progresses. I wish I had BUFKIT so I can compare an omega/time/temperature cross section to see if this was expected.

snowfan
So based on everyone's obs so far, it looks like a general 1" from my area northward, about 2" in N. AA, Howard, S. Frederick, 3" in the DC metro area, and 4"+ south. I'm in AA and at 3" now.
CoastalWx
This is better. The best lift is just south of frontogenesis area.

Less than modeled by a bit, though it is notoriously hard to capture snow precip well in rain gauges.

clskinsfan
The models seemed to miss the dry air that is entrenched between these 2 main bands. It has had an affect on me for sure. I would imagine a lot of that will fill in once the coastal gets cranking.

WeatherNC
6-8" depending on where you measure south of Front Royal at the foot of the Blue Ridge. Farm Neighbor went whole hog and broke out the 70K Big A**Tractor with a front end loader, clearing out the 1.5 mile lifeline to a back woods road. Hammer down, expect MC to show up around midnight.
