Winter Storm Obs 1/22-23

Heavy snow. Took about thirty minutes to switch after a period of heavy rain, sleet, and feezing rain.

It's really interesting Carvers. On RadarScope using the correlation coefficient it actually showed the rain/snow line moving north. I watched it move from south of Kingsport to just now the state line. Big flakes now.

Seems to be mixing with sleet here now. Hopefully it's a prelude to change.

Flake size is small, but it's coming down mixed with some sleet at a pretty good rate. I'd say it's probably 60% snow with 40% sleet right now. Wish I could go back to sleep lol!

Switch to all snow. Quarter sized flakes. Sadly it looks like the dry slot is approaching.

33.2 with rain & occasional sleet mixing in.  I also noted a few wet snowflakes hitting the car windshield this morning.  But the predominate precip type is rain.  May be some light icing with temps so close to freezing.

Friend who work in a hotel off 134 says it's snowing heavily in Caryville. So it's at least that far south. Not sure about any further down.

Heavy heavy snowfall now. Looks like a thick fog outside. So of course the dry slot is racing this way to end it/allow warming etc etc. But I've picked up almost 3/4ths of an inch and traffic reports are already foul across the county. I-75 is down to one lane and it's snowing so hard that traffic is down to 20 mph on hwy 63.

Snowing at a good clip here SW of Kingsport. Medium sized flakes. This on top of our earlier mix.

The local news is just here constantly now. WBIR drove up here snow chasing and are riding around Caryville in a white out.

 

But that will end in about 5 minutes as the dryslot is heading north at about 50 mph.

1/4 to 1/2 in JC. Radar TRYING to fill in a little back toward Greeneville and southwest. Hoping to squeeze an inch out before the first opportunity at snow leaves the area..

My folks in London said they had about a quarter inch of ice overnight.  Power still on, but trees and power lines coated.  They switched over to all snow around 6 this morning.

 

I had about .61 of mostly all liquid overnight.

The warm nose was potent with this one. It was 24 degrees in London when the precip moved in and still the 850s were too much.

 

I'm starting to fill around the dry slot. I will be well pleased if it is only a short duration,

You're gonna get back to snow quickly. It sleeted here for 10 minutes and then it went full on snow.

Ended up with 3" with this first pass....looks like the dry slot and/or downsloping hole is huge, lasting most of the day?...hope to score more after the system passes further....
