Guest Pamela
Weren't there a few winters in the 80s where the island jackpotted? The two most exciting near misses of the decade were 1/15/83: WSW and 8 to 12 inches predicted...an inch of slush fell...two feet in the Berkshires & at Albany. About 2/25/89: Huge snowstorm for South Jersey...2 feet near Atlantic City...arctic high kept this area mainly dry..some light snows reached the East End. bluewave
I always wanted to be "north and west of the City" growing up. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk The two nice surprises for me that went against the forecasts for mostly or a change to rain were 1/20/78 and 1/23/87. One of the few storms that the 2000's couldn't top or rival from the 80's was the 4/6/82 blizzard. An April blizzard with plenty of CG lightning strikes has been elusive despite all the snowfall records. Also the last time NYC had three record low temperatures in a row. When I was a kid, I used to tell my parents all the time that I was moving N&W. Amazing how the focus has shifted here the past decade or so! EasternLI
Classic NOAA Weather Radio 80's broadcast: Snow changing quickly to rain for the coastal locations with temperatures rising through the 30's. Heavier snows expected north and west of NYC with temperatures only climbing to around freezing. The worst was when the snow would change to heavy rain by school time and I had to walk to the bus stop through deep puddles of slush. I remember that like it was yesterday. The best(worst) one I can remember, was dropping below zero out here from the damn radiational cooling one morning. Pouring rain later that afternoon. Don't remember the exact date. gravitylover
That 4/6/82 storm was pretty fantastic. What about the Easter storm in 79(?) I think it was. We got pounded in Oceanside where I grew up and had days off from school. The two nice surprises for me that went against the forecasts for mostly or a change to rain were 1/20/78 and 1/23/87. SnowGoose69
Dec of '89 was frigid and windy There was like 5 misses that month to the south or east and northwest, it was crazy. Its probably a near impossibility to repeat a Dec Jan or Feb that cold in NYC and have that little snow.
