Yep I had friends that were on the ship

Good lord, have you heard from them?

My wife and I were on a Norwegian Cruise Line boat from Miami the weekend after the Blizzard. It was nice to go from a great storm and about 2' of snow, to 70 and sun and calm seas. Very fortunate we missed this nightmare; people outside of this board don't realize nor'easters can be as bad or worse than hurricanes in the open ocean.

Yeah they posted on Facebook that they were on the ship but that they're fine. But instead of going to Florida they're turning around and headed back to port

There seems to be a ton of potential each week, but outside of the blizzard (which makes up for a ton), nobody (except for LI) is really cashing in

It's interesting how most of the jackpot zones since Boxing Day 2010 have been LI/New England/CNJ.

Maybe the blocking has been so strong that the storm track is getting displaced further SE than normal.

Even 09-10 had a few high profile misses N and W of NYC.

New England is almost always going to see quite a bit of snow; no matter what the pattern is (save for the extreme southeast portion of the region).  Long Island & central New Jersey have definitely profited from the blocking action you cite; though really semi-continuously since that 2000-01 winter.

Wantagh 10" last storm 5" this storm. Eastern nassuas time to shine.

Had this storm been 200 miles west we would have had an epic blizzard

Payback for all the winters in the 80's to early 90s where the coast was too warm and rained

while the interior got much of the snow. I like the new climo better here.

Ohhhh I remember the 80s. Being a kid a snow day was like a gift from God. Now it seems like everything grands for the coast. Looks like central Suffolk walks with 10" again

Classic NOAA Weather Radio 80's broadcast:

Snow changing quickly to rain for the coastal locations with temperatures rising through the 30's.

Heavier snows expected north and west of NYC with temperatures only climbing to around freezing.

The worst was when the snow would change to heavy rain by school time and I had to walk to the bus stop

through deep puddles of slush.

I always wanted to be "north and west of the City" growing up.

Weren't there a few winters in the 80s where the island jackpotted?

I don't think so...in 1986-87 the co-op at Patchogue just got past the 40 inch mark for seasonal snowfall...the only Long Island station to eclipse 40 inches that decade.

Not much happened those 10 years...you had a blizzard on 4/6/82 with 8 to 12 inches...a blizzard on 2/11/83 with about 22 inches...1986-87 had a couple nice storms in January & February...but nothing spectacular...there was a nice, narrow 12 inch event in central Long Island  courtesy of a Norlun Trough on 12/13/88...and a surprise Thanksgiving snowstorm of 7 or 8 inches in 1989...but that was about it.  Oh, it was very cold in January 1982 and there were some cold stretches in the middle of the decade when Patchogue & Bridgehampton saw a few days with morning lows in the teens below zero.  Other than that, nada.

Dec of '89 was frigid and windy  :shiver:
