dryslot
Monday was always garbage in my mind. Yes, Here for sure lol at the meltdowns after one overnight run on a LR threat. Let's try to reel it in and act like we've been there before. At least for another model suite of runs
tamarack
IMBY, this was '94-'95...hands down. '06-'07 was in another league....much better. 94-95, the 2 storm winter. Feb 4-5 was a great near-blizzard, while Jan 2's 12" event came on a 1-3" forecast. That month was the first time I'd seen a 12"+ snowpack completely disappear in a Maine January, helped along by 16-17 being more than 30F AN. CapturedNature
Still amazes me how people can lose it over not getting any snow. I agree. That and the fact that we've been spoiled in recent seasons, save for the winter of 2012. Having grown up in the 70s and 80s with back to back to back crappy winters has fully prepared me for anything. The only thing I want at this point in the season is good sugaring weather (highs no more than the 40s and lows in teens and 20s) till the end of March. A few wintry days here and there are a bonus. WinterWolf
Still amazes me how people can lose it over not getting any snow. With all due respect, It's not about not getting snow. When you love to participate in winter sports( skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing) and you can't do any of those, virtually anywhere in New England, at the height of the winter season, it's very frustrating. That's what is tough for me, and some others on here. It has nothing to do with missing out on Monday or Wednesday's storm next week. But some on here make it sound like that's what it is, and it's not at all. My point was only that it's been a very tough and disappointing winter season thus far for outdoor enthusiasts, and it's 2/3rds over. Maybe March saves us? But I'm not feeling to confident on that at the moment!
moneypitmike
I was just doing some web browsing to see if I can find a pool service. I guess my actions underscore how I've moved on from this non-winter. Has anyone used a pool service for regular cleaning/maintenance? I always did it myself, but now that I'm in Boston a few days a week I'm considering out-sourcing it. No idea what the cost is for that and if it's worth it. CapturedNature
I've been wondering how that season will be. You think it could be a good one? Long story short, I think it will be a decent season looking at temperatures through early April. As long as we don't have a week of 60s and 70s without any freezing weather at the end of the month, the sap should flow and that should give all of us plenty of time to collect, boil and bottle. I know some producers that tapped their trees back in January. For a couple of reasons I waited until last week to start but mainly because of the cold snap. The trees will run whenever the temps are above freezing during the day and below at night. It's the freeze/thaw cycle that draws the sap up through the roots by capillary action. That stops when the leaf buds start coming out which around me is early April. Once you tap though, the tap hole stops producing sap after about 6-8 weeks so their taps will slow down while mine keep flowing for a few more weeks. Whineminster
The 80s couldn't have been that bad, I bet there was pack on the ground through most of those winters. Nickles and dimes add up.

WinterWolf
Skiing has been ok Ok at best. Thank goodness for the advancement in snow making technology!! If it weren't for that...it would be curtains. Unfortunately snowmobiling and snowshoeing can depend on snow making.

WinterWolf
is a trip to WNY that much further than NMaine?Logical question Ginxy. The best snowmobiling in NY State is in the tug hill/old forge/Adirondack areas. Those areas are only half the distance that I travel to northern Maine. But That area is nuts with the amount of people and drunks on the trails. And I don't think they have any/much snow either at this point. Maybe NNE can get a couple big dumps the next 3 weeks, if they can, I may be able to get one trip in, which would be really nice. But that's a big IF RIGHT NOW. We'll see. I can't speak for other places but I know for my area we would have a few inches on the ground but a pack was hard to build up due to cutters washing away what you had. I remember having crusty snow cover of a few inches most of the time and when you had some decent snow you were out doing something in it. Like Ginx said, 87 and 88 were decent years but then we had 4 years in a row of below normal snowfall.

There's a club in Union (I'll put the link below). I know that doesn't help right now because the snow is more spotty (but fairly still solid in the woods) but an option for the future. http://www.nipmucktrailriders.com/index.html

But I live close to wooded areas where I could take out the sled and burn around a bit. I'm a bit spoiled and enjoy the big time riding up in Northern Aroostook county Maine, and far northern Vermont and New Hampshire. Yes we've had that same 8-12 inches here to up until Tuesday. Thanks for the thought my friend!! :-).
