With social media there's an increase in awareness and the subsequent hysteria regarding impending snowstorms. People no longer have to wait for the 6pm or 10pm news to get the scoop and those that never wached the news get it on their mobile devices. It's out there in full force, shoved down everyone's throats. It's a trickle down affect.

I don't think people are softer these days per say it has more to do with the fact that more people know and the more people post on social media, the more likely it is to get a "help I'm stuck in my house I need someone to come dig me out" post or video clip. That's happenned years ago too just that nobody knew unless it was a story on the 10pm news caught on camera by a reporter.

Social media has allowed all of us to see intricate details of others' lives in which we would otherwise be unaware or wouldn't care about anyway.

It's one reason why I don't really participate on a grand scale but to each their own. There's certainly a lot of anecdotes that come from social media. Just take a look at what gets passed off as fact when discussing the weather. Some of it makes me cringe and I've only seen a relatively small sample.

That's a micro-aggression. I need a safe space! (Thumb in mouth, rocking in corner)

Society as a whole today is soft

The old generations all walked uphill both ways to/from school!

Sure society as a whole isn't as tough as they used to be. That's how it works when societies prosper and grow.

No one is as tough as the original cavemen and hunters and gatherers....and future generations figured out how not to live like that.

Smh. I tried a sock 7 months ago but it didn't work.

lol well played.

Most of us post an unhealthy amount.  But I look at the forum like social media.  Some folks spend their time constantly checking FB/Twitter/email, etc.  I check a weather forum.  My wife ain't a huge fan either and she knows the look of the pages here, so when she's asking for help with dinner and finds this page open on the browser that I'm slow to leave...it sometimes goes over like a fart in church

The trick is getting away during the boring periods so you have some wife-time in the bank for when the real storm hits.

Cavemen were tough SOBs but their life expectancy was like 30 years old. It's good not to be so "tough" now.

Yup.  Its basic evolution of a society.  And in another 30 years a lot of us in our 30s will feel the same way...because its true.  Its just how it works.  Society doesn't evolve to make things more difficult for the masses, we all collectively work towards survival and in doing so make things easier on ourselves.

I don't think it is a new phenomenon. At least it is something that each generation says about the younger one from what I've seen

I'd say I am softer than my parents gen. They were softer than theirs. So far I've been lucky that my son and daughter seem to be reversing this trend. Lol.

Apparently not

CT Rain

Location:

West Hartford, CT

Bridgeport was able to handle 30" with nearly 4" of liquid equivalent in it after a few rough days... So I bet those smaller towns/cities NW of DC will be ok

Large number of CT contractors down there now. My friend is still opening up roads that haven't been touched, until now.

You have lowered your standards

Today
Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 41. West wind 7 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Tonight
Clear, with a low around 22. West wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Would you look at that.  Closest climate station to me PVD pulled of a +10 yesterday.  Torch!
