AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO/ROMEOVILLE IL

327 PM CST MON DEC 28 2015

SHORT TERM

327 PM CST

THROUGH THIS EVENING...

IMPACTS FROM THE MAJOR...THOUGH OCCLUDING STORM SYSTEM...JUST EAST

OF KSTL AS OF MID AFTERNOON...CONTINUE INTO THE EARLY EVENING

HOURS. TEMPERATURES ARE SLOWLY WARMING ABOVE FREEZING FROM SOUTH

TO NORTH...THOUGH NOT IN A UNIFORM FASHIN PER MOST RECENT SURFACE

OBSERVATIONS. CONSIDERING THAT SEVERAL LOCATIONS AWAY FROM THE

LAKE IN NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST IN ALONG AND NORTH OF I-80

WERE STILL REPORTING FREEZING RAIN OR SLEET OR A COMBINATION OF

THE TWO...OPTED TO CONTINUE THE WINTER STORM WARNING THAT WAS SET

TO EXPIRE AT 3PM. THIS INCLUDES COOK COUNTY AWAY FROM THE

LAKESHORE. ALSO EXTENDED PORTIONS OF WARNING FOR COUNTIES ALONG

AND NORTH OF I-88 THAT WAS SET TO EXPIRE AT 6PM UNTIL 9PM TO

ACCOUNT FOR LINGERING POCKETS OF ACCUMULATING FREEZING

RAIN/FZRA/SLEET MIX DUE TO TEMPERATURES STAYING NEAR OR AT

FREEZING. IN ADDITION...STRONG EAST WINDS WILL CONTINUE AS

PRESSURE FALLS MAXIMIZE...POSING RISK OF SPORADIC POWER OUTAGES

WHERE ICE HAS ACCUMULATED ON TREES AND POWERLINES.

WINDS SHOULD PEAK OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS...WITH GUSTS UP TO 50

MPH IN THE ADVISORY AREA...AND UP TO 60 MPH ALONG THE IL SHORE IN

THE HIGH WIND WARNING...ALONG WITH LAKESHORE FLOODING. THE

LAKESHORE FLOOD WARNING WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT THOUGH 12AM CST.

PRIMARY UNCERTAINTY IS HOW LONG SLEET WILL CONTINUE TO MIX IN WITH

THE RAIN/FREEZING RAIN. PEAK OF WARMING ALOFT IS OCCURRING WITHIN

NEXT FEW HOURS...AND THERE CONTINUES TO BE A REFREEZE LAYER BELOW

THE WARM LAYER FROM 750-700 MB. ITS POSSIBLE THAT ICE PELLETS

COULD LINGER LONGER THAN INDICATED IN HOURLY WEATHER

GRIDS...THOUGH WITH TEMPERATURES WARMING ABOVE FREEZING...IMPACTS

WILL BE MITIGATED.

DRY SLOT OF CYCLONE IS STARTING TO LIFT OVER THE AREA FROM THE

SOUTH...THOUGH LIGHTNING ACTIVITY HAS BEEN MINIMAL...SO WILL BACK

OFF ON THUNDER MENTION TO SLIGHT CHANCE.

53 mph gust at Waukegan.

It's howling out there. If it was all snow it would GHD Blizzard for sure. Now I know pretty much know how it was during the GHD Blizzard 1.0 for you! :D

Temp actually fell off half a degree or so since 3pm.

There's the low heading up I-55.

First flakes flying in downtown St Paul. Heavy returns moving up from the southeast.

Chitown Storm, how much are you thinking for the MSP area? I'm over in Excelcior, MN. Seems like we are good for a solid 6-8" by tomorrow afternoon but it's been painful waiting on this WAA band to get here.
