40/70 Benchmark
CIPS has that region in the 24"+ range. I just saw over 2' in a real storm last season. Now, if it were what transpired in Buffalo last year, then we'd talk.
USCAPEWEATHERAF
Look Ray, every time a major lake effect snow event looks this good at day 4 and actually happens, much more snow falls instead especially with these LES events. Was the BUF event last year forecasted 4 days out no, it happens within 2 days of time. We will leave on Thursday morning, arrive there in the afternoon, we wouldn't miss much in the way of snow as 850mb temps cool. Then the real stuff happens Thursday night, we take video nonstop of the event. We need a driver and a decent vehicle.
USCAPEWEATHERAF
I'm trying to get Brian to come along as well, but he might have to work, I will take the bus to south station and then the subway to your area and we meet there, or we will drive to your place with Brian and we can all leave there at the same time. USCAPEWEATHERAF
I just had flurries around 902am EST, here in Harwich, MA a good band has developed over Cape Cod Bay where the strongest echoes are located, it is moving into PYM county. USCAPEWEATHERAF
The December 31st system is getting colder on the models, even if there is barely any QPF associated with it.
USCAPEWEATHERAF
Yeah Ray, you think? Right now it appears the 31st system is trending colder with each passing model cycle. NAM is getting colder. Maybe we can squeeze a surprise out of that system. I might wait like Ray said for an even bigger LES event.
qg_omega
This is a crazy thread, how much snow does cape cod average on pure OES? It can't be more than a couple of inches at most. Most of the snow is ocean enhanced during synoptic systems and I would think those snows favor areas to the west and southwest of the actual cape
USCAPEWEATHERAF
If my friend Brian can make it out of work for this weekend, we are going to Tug Hill Plateau.
USCAPEWEATHERAF
Yeah the OES events before Synoptic events favor PYM county within northeasterly winds. I'm going to the Tug Hill if my friend can get off work.
SouthCoastMA
Places like Manomet/Sandwich do very well with ocean enhancement on a NNE or even a N wind during departing Noreasters. But yeah..more appreciable OES seems to occur around the south shore on a due NE wind.
CoastalWx
There are sort of 3 types of OE stuff. Direct ocean effect which is just bands of snow off the ocean. Ocean enhanced, which show up as a band, or cellular echoes moving from east to west across SE MA. These tend to be rimed flakes, but will add to totals. There is also the coastal front type ocean effect in which moist air is lifted up and over CF across SE MA. Ocean enhanced stuff happens a lot and does not need a big temp differential. A 50kt LLJ slamming against the coastline will do it. I see it often. Very notable in rain events.
USCAPEWEATHERAF
That is a great point Scott. You see all kinds of ocean enhanced echoes during Nor'easters.
USCAPEWEATHERAF
OE potential is there, strong on the GFS, not sure about the EURO. Anyone have any thoughts on this? We are within 30 hours of the NAM being in range.
nzucker
I don't drive, so it is very difficult for me to get to places I want to go.Learn to drive, get a car, then you can go chase...But asking people to give up their New Years plans for a dime-a-dozen LES just to drive you there doesn't seem too realistic.
