powderfreak
St. John is almost always ice-locked there by mid Dec. This year, not even much on the edges. Yeah I noticed that too...almost no ice up there is fairly remarkable. Anyway, I love watching upslope rain fall outside my window at home following a cold front in mid-December on CAA NW winds. This is like what happens in September and October and you see me posting about "If only this was December it'd be a nice 1-4" fluff event on the backside of a cutter." Not this year, ha. OceanStWx
This Afternoon A chance of drizzle. The drizzle could be heavy at times. Areas of dense fog. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 43. East wind around 5 mph. Actually did have some pretty intense drizzle earlier. Good stuff. We're here to serve.

powderfreak
I would have a melt down but: It would not change anything Its been so warm there is nothing to actually melt I'm just absolutely amazed at it at this point. This is late October climo for like weeks on end in December. We are actually cheering on icy or firm snow conditions (Sunday was something special out there, and I never have been happier that the snow set-up rock hard), just because it means the snow isn't melting. What's painful is watching waves of wind-blown rain roll through the yard, knowing these would be some fun snow squalls in just about any other winter. Even 2006-2007 had 10" of snow at BTV in December, and I thought that was a horrible month. Its not worth freaking out about, just sit back and marvel at it at this point. dryslot
Really no reason to melt at this point, Its not like we did not know Dec was going to suck, If it gets to mid Jan and long range looks abysmal, That's another story
mreaves
Meh, I probably won't melt at all. I'm going to be going back and forth between here and my parents several times in the coming months and a mild winter would probably be easier to deal with on a practical level. My wife would have to snowblow, shovel, stay home with the boy on snow days etc. Having said that, I would still prefer dealing with the inconvenience of snow than not having any. Does BTV have anything through OCT, NOV, DEC? I don't think they have ever been shut out in December have they? I thought I read that on the NWS page, that the lowest was around 1.2" or something. Still have half the month to go to sneak in something.

adk
BTV with 0.2" from snow showers at the end of November. That's it. And frankly that is the most liberal .2" i've ever seen. I saw frost deeper than that this winter. At this point I'm starting to openly root for a record. Why not? It already is going to suck, might as well be a memorable suck (hence why my sixers fandom has not waned). That way when it all turns around it will be even sweeter. And to compare this to 2006 at BTV: December 2006...+6.8 and 10" of snow. December 2015 (to date)...+11.1 and 0.0" of snow.
powderfreak
Totally unrelated to weather, but I know we have a few drone operators here in the NNE thread. Looks like the FAA is now regulating it and will require you to register your "aircraft". http://www.tetongravity.com/story/adventure/sorry-guys-the-drone-party-is-over According to NPR, the long-awaited regulations from the FAA released yesterday say that the federal agency will instead be considering them unmanned aircraft, and their operators real pilots who will be regulated in much the same manner as real aircraft and helicopter pilots. This applies to any drones between half a pound and 55 pounds, and most users will not be allowed to fly anything bigger. As far as we understand, commercial drone pilots will need to have some sort of FAA-certified pilot's license as well, and The Verge has a funny article about how freelance photographers hoping to shoot from drones commercially are getting their pilot's licenses in a cheap, fast way you'd never imagine: by learning to fly hot air balloons. We'd imagine, though, that as the FAA continues to hash out regulations for small drones, drone-specific pilot schools and programs will emerge. Free to register my drone this time around although they want a CCard to charge the $5 to. They will then issue a credit. Great, another database with my CC for hackers to break into. I will get an email with my drone reg number which I have to mark on my drone. I also have to carry the form with me if I am flying. I can see a local cop giving me a ticket for flying without the form. I actually think it is a good idea. If I crash and cause damage to someone else its easy to track back to owner, like wise if a drone was ever involved with a plane we would know the owner assuming the drone survives. J.Spin
Yeah its been snowing more often than not today, but likewise I can't find anything on radar. I saw that Whiteface was actually above the inversion this morning, and we even had some blue sky at the summit earlier today. So the cloud depth can't be higher than like 5,000ft...but yet we were getting good dendritic growth and temps aren't necessarily all that favorable for it. I was equally confused as there's nothing on radar, like absolutely nothing, so I'm wondering if the beam is going over the top of it? But the BTV radar usually samples the orographic snows fine. I have no idea. I've got flurries at home too, so they are drifting downwind. Yeah, I was looking out from my office earlier today and it clearly looked like snow along the spine, but I saw essentially nothing on radar. It’s nice to have those ground truth shots you put in the ski thread. On their web cam you can see that the lower slopes of the main mountain at Bolton Valley are whitened as well. I didn’t get a chance to send in observations this morning, but on my way through the Winooski Valley it looked like the snow line was around the 2,000’ mark. It seems a bit lower than that now actually. Someone in the Greens could pick up some surprise snow too....if any lake effect upslope combo hits someone for a few hours I could see a sneaky 3-4" somewhere. It’s funny you say that because that’s just the feel I’m getting from looking at the models. It’s the sort of thing you can’t count on, but the possibility is out there. It’s been a couple of weeks now since our last valley event, so it would be nice to get a little something to fit with December. Even if they systems aren’t going to be all snow, it sure looks like there’s the potential for things to pick up this second half of the month. We’re sort of due – I checked my data and mean snowfall for our site just passed 30” as of today.

Well now I'm pretty sure it wasn't on radar likely is because the beam was too high...real shallow stuff because this afternoon the upper mountain broke out of the clouds and into blue sky. So it was snowing out of a cloud that was literally just sitting at like summit height. This afternoon the top was in the blue skies as the cloud deck lowered.
