nzucker
Looks like some more shots at 60 around Christmas lolGFS has a 594dm ridge over the East Coast at 384 hours. The 588dm contour makes it past NYC with 850s of >10C. Could be near 80F in warmer parts of the mid-Atlantic such as DCA.
bluewave
This is the latest in December that JFK ever reached 70 degrees. Easily beats the previous record high of 63 in 1983 by a whopping 7 degrees. December 70 degree highs at JFK: 12/4/82.....70 12/4/98.....70 12/6/01.....70 12/7/98.....75 12/13/15...
Sundog
One of the nicest days I can remember in NYC in recent memory. No bugs, light breeze, 68 and sunny. No bugs? No way, there are tons of them. Flies, bees, etc. I've seen plenty today.
dWave
Not much of a backdoor front here, although the NWS was expecting one as they lowered the forecast high to 59F last night. However, it's actually 64F at the White Plains Airport ASOS and 62F at the nearest Wunderground station in Dobbs Ferry. Still rising in warm sunshine, too. I can remember 60s in December before like 12/25/14 and 12/21/13, but it's usually one or two warm days ahead of a cutter and strong cold front. This time, it's going on a week of 60+ weather, especially if you consider compressional warming and 850mb temperature spike ahead of the FROPA Monday and then downsloping Tuesday on west winds with cold air lagging the front. Then, we have another cutter with potential for 60s Wednesday and Thursday. To have such a long stretch of +15-20F departures and 60-degree weather in December is unprecedented. One day of this weather ahead of a cutter is normal, ten days is something exceptional. The back door cold front was enough to keep LGA and other places close to LI Sound in the low to mid 60s, while JFK gets to 70 and upper 60s in CPK. Whats really crazy is that we need cold fronts to hold temps "down" to the low 60s. I definitely agree the consistency of well above normal temps is what really blows me way. A couple 60 degree days in Dec is actually normal, but just on and on, and only broken with still above normal 50s is remarkable. I remember early Jan 98 had a bunch of 60s I believe, If I remember right they were came with rainy/stormy weather though so it wasn't as enjoyable.
