Winter Rythms -- A Southeast Collection

Cold Rain

For the boring times....

An Ode to Sleet

Winter's chill upon the air

Solid water everywhere

Dropping down a frozen treat

Fall the first few pings of sleet

Brilliant ice in shape and form

Raised in voice within its storm

Growing fast in depth and seat

Piles a proper fall of sleet

Frozen wonder all around

Bursting forth in sight and sound

Born where cold and moisture meet

Culminated now in sleet

Green is changed to milky white

As daylight darkens into night

Starlight echos at its feet

The warming glow of wondrous sleet

It is going to snow in a few days. I remember
This time last year. My heart, O how it bled!
Had I been asked: 'What ails thee?' I should have said:
'Nothing. Leave me alone. It is December.'

O those bad thoughts! I had no good of them,
This time last year when heavy snow was cloaking
The world outside. And now as then I am smoking
A pipe of briar-wood with an amber stem.

And still my old oak chest of drawers smells good.
But I was foolish, for these things can never
Be changed, and they do only pose as clever
Who drives away the things bred in their blood.

Why do we think, and why, like the bees' humming,
Must these our tongues be talking? We understand
Kisses and tears although they speak not, and
Sweeter than sweet words is a comrade's coming.

The stars have been baptized by name and class
Although they need it not, and figures showing
That beautiful comets through the darkness going
Will pass through light will force them not to pass.

Where is last year's distress? My memory fails me,
What weeds of woe were in this heart full-grown.
I should answer: 'It is nothing. Leave me alone,'
If someone in my chamber asked: 'What ails thee?'

The South of 85 sonnet!

GSP was calling for 5-7",

And my dismay, sleet started to fall from heaven!

A crusty inch is all that did fall,

It was not a good day, not at all!

That's part of being south of 85,

The interstates cause havoc in snowlovers lives!

The next time I hear we might get an inch,

I will hope the 850 temps won't put me in a pinch!

I heard it thunder the other day,

Per Brick, the next winter storm is only 10 days away!

I hope the anal logs don't let us down,

I hope to not end this winter with a frown !

It's the least wonderful time of the year
With folks all wishcasting
And everyone telling you "The models are queer"
It's the least wonderful time of the year
It's the crap-crappiest season of all
With those model-chase postings and hindcast reportings
When snow fails to fall
It's the crap- crappiest season of all

Great job guys.  Funny stuff!

Wherefore Art Thou +NAO

North Atlantic Oscillation

Why doest thee ascend?

Just for once why canst thee drop

From now till winter's end?

Vortex over Greenland

When shall thee yonder roam

To different and distant shores

To make anew your home?

Summer ridging welcomed to

A perfect sleepy spot

But when winter beckons thee

Stay fastened you cannot

Oft we thus have dreamed

Of friendly NAO

But night's illusions soon reveal

The lack of winter snow

Dang, this brought a tear to my eye!  And just when I thought you couldn't be revered more, the moles have christened a new drink after you.  It's something of a mystery, but I know it has draino, anti freeze, and EverClear in it, lol.  They call it the StarFleet Hyperdrive.  They are all toes to the moon at the moment, but when they come out of it, I'll try to get you the receipe. T

Draino huh? That's a pretty stiff drink sir! I was hoping you would see that. I wrote that one for you. I'm open to other requests too. Otherwise, we'll just make it up as we go along. :)

Say hi to the moles for us!

  • 2 weeks later...

JB says -5 avg this winter will be,

That seems very much in jeopardy !

Follow me on twitter you see,

I will forecast lots of snow for yee!

Analogs are useless to me,

They are a pipe dream, for people wanting it to be icy.

The lack of winter weather has me down,

JB and analogs have me crying the tears of a clown!

Oh the weather outside is spiteful
The high temps so undelightful
The models are so full of woe
Say - Oh No No No Oh No No

When we finally get it right
Seems March will be out of sight
So if there's any sign of snow
It'll be due to a volcano

(or an unexpected deep sliding southern low)
