tamarack
I may be the only poster on this board that didn't pick October 2011, haha. That's because I hadn't chimed in. The Octobomb was 4.5" of drippy slop on a 12-16" forecast. Oct. 29-30, 2000 was 6.3" of fluff and my only sub-32 max for Oct. The all-stars: Locations (only those making the team): thru 1971 -- NNJ; 1976-85 - Ft. Kent; 1986-98 - Gardiner; 1999-present - New Sharon JAN...1987 (% storms, 49.3". HM to 1994, 11" less snow, 9F colder) FEB...1961 (24" on 3-4, with NYC's strongest Feb winds, brought NNJ pack to 40-50", top depth since their good data began) MAR...2001 (48" OG on 3/31) APR...1982 (2007 had 8" more snow, but '82 blizz - low teens & gusts near 60 - takes the spot) MAY...1976 (1.5" in 1 hr on 5/7, while I tilled the garden) JUN...1980 (T snow, enough to coat grass. 1" plus in the woods) JUL...1978 (Frost on 7/31, scorched my pumpkins, killed neighbor's beans) AUG...1982 (T snow. HM 1971 - PRE plus Doria = 8.9" RA in 24 hr) SEP...1991 (3-5" snow in N.Maine, none in Gardiner) OCT...2000 NOV...2014 (13" storm 26-27) DEC...1976 (61.5", top month I've recorded) Jackpot winter OCT 2000...6.3" NOV 1983...28.6" DEC 1976...61`.5" JAN 1987...49.3" FEB 2008...46.5" MAR 2001...55.5" APR 2007...37.2" MAY 1984...2.2" Total...287.1 Top torch: Feb 1981 - CAR finished +14.5, and 16-25 there was 10 cons days +20 to +30, avg +26. 2nd place: Either Feb-Mar 2010 (47 cons AN days) for duration, or Mar 2012 (Farmington's 3 warmest Mar days since 1893) for peak value. tamarack
Yes, the second was much more noteworthy. That was #3 cutter here. 24-25 featured 0.8" RA with temps up near 50. 19-20 had almost 1" and 27-28 more than 2", both with temps 50 or milder. Farmington snowpack fell from 40" to 8". At CAR, which had missed the biggies, depth went from 13" to zero. A week of bare ground is not common there in January.

That warm spell ran the ice on the St. John and the lower Allagash. None of the local greybeards could remember that happening in February before. Damage In Tolland
So there were lots of 60's and 70's in Feb of 81? I was only 9 so don't remember that
tamarack
So there were lots of 60's and 70's in Feb of 81? I was only 9 so don't remember that No 60s-70s, but I'm talking NNE, here. Going into 1981, CAR's mildest Feb temp in 42 yr records was 49. The month's thaws tied that twice and broke it 7 times, with a 48 and a 47 thrown in for good measure. 2/20/1994 now holds the top Feb temp, but of the 10 Feb days in 76 years with max 50 or milder, 7 occurred in 1981. Pretty impressive considering January was an ice box. Late Dec-early Jan was as cold a 2 weeks as one ever sees, It included CAR's coldest max on record (-16 on 1/4/81), plus the great Christmas freeze-out. The last week-plus of Jan was less frigid, about +5 (which at CAR means a daily mean of about 15.) Combine that with very modest snowfall (Farmington's 123rd least snowy winter out of 123, with 1" less than the winter before), and the ice was plenty thick. However, two rain events with temps to 50 during the first half primed things for the extended warmth of the 2nd.
