michsnowfreak
Got out my camera and went to the park. Spent a few hours and wished I could have frozen time lol. Flocking scenes like this are often not seen in even the best of winters. It was the "perfect storm" so to speak of wet snow falling, temps and dews crashing after, the wind not being overly strong, and skies clearing. Posting the rest in the pic thread. Geos
Even the MDW COOP observer had 5.8", though given the shape of the lake, I'm not sure how many miles closer that is to the lake than ORD. MDW itself (from the terminal) to the lake is 8 miles. ORD is 12.8 miles. It was pretty fascinating to see this storm keep that mild air mass over the lake confined for the most part. I can't think of a heavier snowfall here with onshore winds when the lake was near 50°. Just looked at my records and this snowfall was the heaviest here in November and December since 1998 when I started recording. It beat out the 12/10-11/2000 storm by 0.1". smoof
Ended up with 3" system snow, and a sweet lake effect band went through last night with 2" more in about an hour! 5" total not bad for being way up on the northern fringe yet again. michsnowfreak
Sorry Im "late" to the stats party, but this November snowstorm ties for 5th largest November snowstorm on record at Detroit. And as you can see from the list, most of the big November snows were long ago (in contrast to much of the rest of the snow season and all the recent snow records weve broken). Top 10: 01.) 9.0" - Nov 15/16, 1932 02.) 6.3" - Nov 25/26, 1950 03.) 6.2" - Nov 8/9, 1921 03.) 6.2" - Nov 15, 1925 05.) 6.0" - Nov 2/3, 1966 05.) 6.0" – Nov 21, 2015 07.) 5.7" - Nov 6/7, 1951 08.) 5.7" - Nov 13/14, 1974 09.) 5.6" - Nov 26, 1977 10.) 5.4" - Nov 16/17, 1920 Also, assuming the 6.2" monthly snowfall holds as the final, this will be the 21st snowiest November on record, JUST missing the top 20. It was the snowiest November since 1978.
