AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO/ROMEOVILLE IL

840 PM CST WED NOV 11 2015

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION

839 PM CST

LINE OF STORMS ENTERING THE WESTERN CHICAGO METRO AREA AND TOWARD

PONTIAC AND BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL HAS SHOWN UNDULATION IN

INTENSITY PER KLOT AND TORD RADARS...WITH A RECENT UPTICK SINCE

825 PM. RADAR IS INDICATING A FEW SEGMENTS OF STRONG MID-LEVEL

CONVERGENCE...INCLUDING IN KANE INTO KENDALL COUNTY...ALONG WITH

POCKETS OF HIGHER VELOCITY LINING UP WITH A FRONT-EDGE TIGHT

REFLECTIVITY GRADIENT. IN ADDITION...THERE HAVE BEEN TRANSIENT

INFLOW NOTCHES...THAT ALTHOUGH HAVE NOT SHOWN MUCH FOR ROTATION

CAN OFTEN CORRELATE TO ISOLATED AREAS OF SEVERE WINDS. SO HAVE

ENDED UP ISSUING A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FOR WIND GUSTS OF

60 MPH...THOUGH THE SEVERE WINDS ARE VERY LIKELY SCATTERED

AMONGST THE WHOLE LINE BASED ON RADAR IMAGERY. MUCH OF THE LINE IS

LIKELY TO HAVE 40 TO 50 MPH WINDS BASED ON UPSTREAM OBSERVATIONS

ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL ILLINOIS.

OVERALL BIG PICTURE TRENDS...INFRARED SATELLITE HAS INDICATED

WARMING CLOUD TOPS AND LIGHTNING HAS DIMINISHED IN COVERAGE...SO

CONTINUE TO EXPECT A VERY GRADUAL DIMINISHING IN INTENSITY WITH

THE STORMS.

Pretty impressive concentration of reports today over IA and surrounding areas.  Filtered report total up to 100 now.  Not bad at all.

To the west of here in LeClaire a report of 70mph winds.  Also a report a large door blowing off a steel building south of here near Atkinson.  I'm anxious to see if there's any damage around here tomorrow after the sun comes up.  Surely the lack of foliage helped out quite a bit.

Reviewing radar it looks like the inflow jet from the rear of the storm may have been what caused the winds to be so strong here.  Was immediately trailing the line.  Weird part was the part of the line that moved through here was sort of meh looking on radar, but it almost looked like a weak bookend vortex.  Looping radar you can see a blob of higher winds move from this area up towards the north side of Sterling, so it had some staying power.

That main line is nowhere near as intense as the radar wold lead you to believe. Complete non-event as it passed me.

Wouldn't have guessed that! Looked like a textbook bow echo.

Winds have slackened off for the time being.
